We're a resilient bunch on CBF, and when people in the past have cancelled and avoided Turkey through fears of terrorism, earthquakes, wars in adjacent lands etc - we've all sneered and carried on regardless - and had the usual great holidays.
But I wonder what members are thinking today, about the possibility of booking Turkey 2016 or giving it a miss.
I posted about how much we loved our October break at the Delta and had already booked for next year - and fully intending to be there. But things are moving fast both politically and in regard to Syria and inter-country relationships. I'm wondering whether to book those flights or wait and see how things pan out - and I've never been like that.
Any other thoughts?
-
The present Mrs H attempted an impersonation of your good lady when I posed your question "Will we be going in 2016".
Her response was
"Yes but not when it's really hot" :-[ :-[ :-[
PS Hope you don't mind me posting Des
-
I didn't book. I messaged hotel and said until the political situation calms down I wont be. He was ok with it, just said I was welcome anytime. I have looked at flights since it happened thinking I might see a cheap enough flight to make me want to risk losing the money, but prices appear to be the same. So I remain on the fence.. :-\
-
Yes that's sort of where I am - as I said I fully intend coming but with things so volatile I wonder if I should be booking flights now or waiting to see how the next 3-6 months go and hopefully booking flights then. When I book flights we're going - and I'd hate to book flights, look forward to it then not go. So it's more a question (for us anyway) of do we book flights now and risk not going, or wait and book flights when things have (hopefully) panned out and calmed.
The Turkish hoteliers etc are so used to all this, they must be holding their breath every other year wondering what is ahead. I do have a fear that the loss of Russian tourists (and there will be) might be enough to send businesses to the wall. If the Russians don't come, our hotels and restaurants may not be there for us.
-
Well I have booked my flights, but I'm not booking a hotel yet. The 2 flights were just £120 in total, so if the worst comes to the worst, I won't be losing a fortune if we can't get to Turkey.
-
So, hesitant then...
:)
-
Yip. I think things will get worse, I'm afraid.
-
I don't usually book my travel until a couple of months in advance anyway. However, next year I will see how events go in the meantime. Still love to get out there though. :-\
-
We are the same I am afraid....Fair enough I know I am one of lifes worriers fortunately my hubby is not and he feels the same as in lets see what happens...
We are the same as Toky we have three trips booked for next year as I booked with Easyjet when they were released so would not lose a fortune if we dont go...
I am gutted inside as there is not really anywhere else I want to go but I suppose like others we are going to wait and see...
-
We are booked for October next year - but admit being a little worried now.....
-
We like Karennina have booked 4 X return flights with EasyJet on the day they were released. We own our own place so if we choose not to travel (at this point in time we still intend to do so) our initial loss is only the air fare. What is interesting though, is that the numerous friends and family that have by now normally contacted us to see when we intend to be there, and did we have any room in the inn, have so far not made that enquiry!
-
We have our flights booked too and we also have our own place in Calis. I am more upbeat and unless the Government say different, we are going.
-
We're already booked for June and like Jacqui, unless formally advised otherwise, we will be there. Sad that we have to even consider not going.
-
The price of Efes hasn't changed yet, so all should be OK :) :) ;)
-
Normally booked my May flight by now but not comfortable with the present situation. Like many we have a property there and we are concerned of what lies ahead.
-
We booked in September for a June holiday and are treating Granddaughter #1 and her parents (flying from Bristol so the flights cost over £1800). Of course I am following current events closely but I think Hilary and I are very unlikely to cancel unless Foreign Office advice changes. I cannot speak for the other three - they have never been to the village where we go so don't know how unlikely a target it is. I suppose the flights might be a more plausible worry.
I don't know whether we will be visiting Turkey again for some time after 2016. If we didn't it would be more tto do with the increasing abuse of human rights under the AKP leaving a nasty taste in the mouth.
-
Much the same as quite a few people on here. We haven't booked flights yet, only because we were intending going out a bit later next year, September/October rather than May/June and were waiting for the Easyjet flights to be released for that period, in the next week I think. We don't have property out there so have no ties, other than sentimental/emotional, so I'm going to wait to see how events turn out during the year and get a late booking if we do decide to go. We will certainly miss Calis if we decide not to go, but we always holiday somewhere else every year anyway so will just have to see what the situation is in Turkey and look elsewhere.
I sincerely hope it doesn't escalate into something bigger, but I'm not confident at the moment. :(
-
Not booked yet (Usually book for May around Christmas) but so far fully intend on doing so. Having our own place it would seem difficult not to go.
-
I have 3 trips booked next year: May, July and September. I will be travelling regardless unless I am told not to. There is nowhere truly safe in this world these days and to be honest I am probably safer in Calis than in London? I sincerely hope the lovely Turkish people don't suffer too much this coming summer. Terrorism or political situations would not stop me having my little piece of heaven. Stay strong people xx
-
I think I am like most home owners in that we still love the place so are booked to go in May and September but increasingly worried about the current situation, the ongoing internal political issues and the overall effect that will have on the area we love and to be honest the property prices. We have always intended to sell up at some stage, never expected to make any money but nor did we expect to lose any which is looking more likely by the day.My wife retires next month and I have about a year left, our intention was to spend more time in Turkey,we may have to revise our retirement plans.
-
Booked flights and accommodation for May. Have however sold our property out there, closed our Turkish bank account and moved all our assets back to U.K. If the worst does happen, all we will have lost is a holiday. Thinking that there will be a glut of very cheap properties in Turkey in the very near future. :(
-
Have however sold our property out there, closed our Turkish bank account and moved all our assets back to U.K.
I'm relieved that we did the same over two years ago. The last to go was our house in Istanbul which we sold last Spring.
What I'd say to those with property is that you have to remember this is Turkey - domestic political unrest is normal and to a certain extent cyclic. In ten years time there is a high possibility everyone will be drinking (relatively) cheap Efes and going on about "the bad old days" to newcomers.
Not that many years ago, the PKK were carrying out regular attacks in Istanbul, kidnapping foreign tourists and workers, assassinating government officials etc. It passed. It was a segment of time within a country and the current problems, in time, will also pass - I suppose for some that's cold comfort if you want to sell now, or in the immediate future. There's no guarantee house prices will be the same, but at least property will be sellable, and not just to a native Turk.
The unknown I suppose is the international unrest - this is the first time in recent years (I sure) that The Republic of Turkey has found itself at odds not only with the west (refugees, oil & Assad) and Russia (Syrian border and oil). The next few weeks, or maybe months, will be a good indicator of how things will pan out. I'm hopeful that the nutter in Ankara (or at least those around him) will realise that he may be Billy big baws in Kasımpaşa, but on the international stage he is more and more being looked upon as a despotic buffoon.
As regards those who holiday, take the FO advice and that from those (the ones with a bit of common sense that is) who live in Turkey. I know there is a bit of an exodus just now, I've seen more leave since Jan this year than in the past fifteen years, but that again will hopefully change in coming years.
I doubt I'll be in Fethiye for a while, but I'll certainly be in Istanbul on several occasions over the next few months. All I'll do is take the normal precautions as described by the FO web site. Mibbe.
Remember, if things change and the FO issue a raised threat level, you'll get your money back from either your carrier or travel insurance. So stop being pussies :)

We were planning to go for five weeks in May/June and I almost booked the flights last week but had a slight problem with our Tesco vouchers so had to wait.
Since this happened we've decide to hold fire until we see where things are heading.
Worst case is we don't visit our place this year but compared to what others have lost this past few weeks I won't lose any sleep over it.
El Presendente seems hell bent on causing trouble and I don't think it's ended yet by any means.
But - in true Yorkshire fashion - if prices drop we might just jump in and hope for the best
-
We have our flights booked for our 3 week chill out in June and our 2 week chill out in October and hotel reserved , only things that will stop us are fingers crossed, the F/O stopping flights and my poor health issues.

As they say...
Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass, but singing and dancing in the rain...
Will be there to let the New year in in Calis......Also booked for May & September 2016...Enjoy while we can....

It isn't all about how we feel about it. I'll go if things don't worsen between now and next year. The problem is that Turkey will struggle if the tit for tat continues with Russia. OK, if the Russians are stopped from going (or choose to boycott Turkey, which seems to be the way it is going) it woun't affect Calis/Fethiye like it will Antalya/Belek/Side etc but it will affect it. There are many more tourists our end than there used to be - and can all the hotels and all the restaurants survive with say 7% less custom? It doesn't follow that they can.
If Russia cuts gas supplies to Turkey, can businesses afford to stay open? If Turkey loses it's (£6 billion?) exports to Russia the economy will suffer...again.
So maybe the question isn't will you go, it could be how much of it will it be there if you do?
-
Plenty in the news suggesting this is the way it will go...
"Russia prepares sanctions against Turkey
Yesterday, during a cabinet meeting the Prime Minister of Russia, Dmitry Medvedev, ordered the drafting of a sanction list. He gave the order, which came from President Putin, to the government. Over the next two days the Kremlin will create a list, with possible economic measures against Turkey. It is unsure what measures Russia will take, these measures can vary from postponing projects to financial restrictions to an import or export boycott to measures in logistics and transport.
Different messages are circling online about the measures that Russia will take, but a boycott has not yet been officially announced. Russia wants to take measures that are permitted by international law and that will cause the least amount of damage to their economy. This is evident from notes published by the government.
Retailer Metro Cash & Carry calls to protect Turkish fruits and vegetables. The company imports 25% of the fresh produce from Turkey, "We can certainly adapt, but an embargo will not benefit consumers. Reduced competition will lead to higher prices," says Boris Minialay from Metro.
Russia did issue a travel warning to Turkey. The absence of 3.3 million Russian tourists that visit Turkey annually would be a hard blow for the sector. The only country that has more tourists in Turkey is Germany.
Despite the fact that an official measure has not yet been announced, there are reports of Turkish trucks being stopped at the border and Turkish businessmen who travelled to Krasnodar, Russia for a conference on a tourist visa have been deported."
-
So if I understand eastern Med economics properly, the fewer tourists that come then the higher the prices that bars and restaurants charge to make up for the lost trade - a negative price v. supply & demand graph.
-
Correct :D
-
If Russia cuts gas supplies to Turkey, can businesses afford to stay open? If Turkey loses it's (£6 billion?) exports to Russia the economy will suffer...again.
Not quite so much mate, round about £4.5bn in 2014 and maybe slightly up this year pro rata - on the flip side, imports from Russia were over £16bn for the same period. Over 20% of all vegetables in Russia came from Turkey so if all trade is stopped, the Russians will have to work hard to fill that gap. You can bet your arse that Putin wont go short of tomatoes and peppers though...
You're on the nail with the gas though, Turkey imports approx 55% of it's natural gas from Russia and at least 20% of its oil. Saying that, they've been (allegedly) buying more and more oil from IS and thats another reason why they're weeed with Russia - a lot of Russian air strikes have been targeting the IS held oil refineries.

The sooner the Trans-Anatolian Pipeline (from Azerbaijan via Turkey into Europe) is completed then the better for Europe and Turkey in their relations with Russia. It is due 2018. If more EU funding would help speed this then it would be money well spent.
-
I wouldn't hold my breath on that one, going by past performance little reginald is bound to upset the Azerbaijanis at some point between now and then!
JF
-
OK Guys
Lets just stop it.
We have lived abroad for the last 35 years. Dodging bullets and bombs from London Jakarta Islamabad and many other places.
Putins war ships are not going to sit off Fethiye and start shelling us.
We still feel safer here than we do in central UK and even though its raining it ant anywhere near as cold.
Spent the day at animal aid and then a couple of wines in Merry Bar a lovely day and absolutely no stress
You can not really beat it here after Africa etc
-
Nobody is doubting what it is like today Steve. There could be a lot of heartache and hardship before many of us hope to visit.
-
Anyway, for all of that I've reliably informed that if we're in Istanbul at the end of March then we'll also be spending a few days in Fethiye. So if Putins warships are off the coast of Fethiye, he can kiss my hairy Scottish arse!
JF
-
...and mine John.
Our May flights are booked and until the Foreign Office tells us different we are going
-
Already booked April/ June flights and unless Easyjet cancel these flights,we will be sat in our seats on these dates. If worst comes to worst and flights are cancelled then we'll get our money back so won't lose out. Really don't think this will happen though.
-
Instead of booking hotel & flights separately this year we have booked a package holiday, at least if all goes 'pear shaped' and the government say no to Turkish travel we can re allocate to elsewhere at no loss, i'm hoping by June everything will have settled somewhat as we are also going with our then to be 1 year old granddaughter, a bit worried, but am hoping all will be ok!!!
-
We're booked up for next year already, and until we are advised otherwise we are going. However I do work in London and after Paris I must admit I was feeling jittery, but I could be a victim in London or Fethiye. If my number is up, it's up.
-
Any views on how current/future situation has/will affect travel insurance to Turkey. :(

we have two holidays booked (Thomson) June and September. Will still travel unless Government says no
-
...and mine John.
Anne, I really didn't want to know how hirsute your bottom is - I was only joking :)
Any views on how current/future situation has/will affect travel insurance to Turkey. :(
No views, only facts - it doesn't affect travel insurance unless the Foreign Office issues an advisory on the destination.
JF
-
All I would say is that if you let any recent events affect your decision on what you will and won't do next year then the terrorists have won. All the events whether with their direct involvement or not, tie back to their actions, and the repercussions. It's exactly what they want.
-
We have a week booked for the first week in June 2016 and a fortnight booked for the last week in July/first week in August 2016. Our views, at the present time, are that unless we are specifically told not to travel then we will be there - but that may obviously change if the situation gets worse :(
-
I haven't booked flights (waiting on Easyjet as we go later in the season) but as things stand will be booking and fully intend being at the Delta in 2016. My concern is that a lot can change in no time - and Russia can make things very difficult for businesses in Turkey - let's face it, one man ended the whole of Tunisia as a holiday destination in one afternoon.
Many of our dearest friends are business/hotel/restaurant owners in Turkey and I pray things stay as they are and we are there next year. We have always gone and earthquakes, Istanbul bombings, Gulf wars etc have not put us off.
But definitely a time to be concerned for the future for Turkey and our Turkish friends.
-
I think we need to wait and see what happens in the following months and how the situation is handled.
-
Domestically, things were a bit hairy in Istanbul and several other town and cities last night - a result of the murder of Tahir Elçi, the head of the Bar Association in Diyarbakır. He was also a prominent human rights activist, so it's easy to work out who will benefit most from him being silenced.
As usual, water cannon, tear gas and extreme violence by the Polis were the order of the day.
JF
-
And the EU are prepared to overlook all this, and offer Reg early talks on joining the EU in return
for help in trying to sort out the migrant crisis they created. When it suits them the EU can turn a
blind eye to human rights. The sooner we're out of it the better for me.
-
As usual, water cannon, tear gas and extreme violence by the Polis were the order of the day.
It's just like the Jollyboys Dayout for the Polis.
-
Yes Scunner, that's the awful thing, the impact on the innocent business owners and friends by the simple act of staying away. It was heartbreaking in Egypt this year to see the majority of places so deserted, with the only place with any volume of tourists being Sharm. Now that has gone. How they will ever survive I don't know and the thought of that happening to friends in Turkey is just terrible. Like you I just hope we are there next year and it will take a lot to keep me away.
-
The EU have just announced a deal has been been reached with the Turkish PM in Brussels
that will give Turkey 3 billion euro's and visa free travel throughout the EU in return for help
with the refugee problem. That's an awful lot of shoe boxes.
Sky news presenters were reporting shocked reactions to the deal, given Turkeys human
rights record and press freedom record. Someone described it as a dirty deal. >:( >:(
-
Yes, hesitant like many other members Scunner....
Sue & I normally go to our place around late April / early May for 3 months stay.
However, booked much later flights for 2016 ... Out late August till mid October
(Depending on situation at that time and of course, official advice)

Hi. This is my first post on this this forum so I am sorry if this is not the right way of replying to a topic.
I and my partner have been to Turkey before although it was 4 yrs ago and it was to OluDeniz. It was a lovely holiday which made us think about another holiday in Turkey. We did come to Calis Beach and thought it was lovely little seaside place. Hence now a few yrs on we are thinking of a holiday in Turkey again and to CalisBeach. What we also liked was the idea of a holiday to Egypt and was looking forward to it until we heard about the IS shooting down a plane and all those innocent people were killed. That made us change our mind about Egypt. We also have a friend who was in Paris on the 13TH when again the IS struck again. All this has made us very nervous about committing ourselves and our two teen daughters to a holiday in Turkey because of the Russia involvement. But having spoken heart to heart about it my partner and I have decided " yes " we will be taking our holiday in Turkey next year.Unless something very tragic happens we will be in Turkey in 2016. If we dont go it means the IS fanatics have got what they want. Thanks.

Perfectly correct way of replying to a topic Alixandria. Great first post and I agree, let's do all we can.

Most folk on here will be in Turkey next year, the problem is the perception many others have of Turkey and how safe it is. Yes, repeat business is good for the bars and restaurants, but they also need that steady stream of new and occasional visitors to survive.
The way things stand, Spain and Greece are going to be heaving next year and there'll be a lot of empty hotel rooms along the south coast of Turkey. Folks I know who would possibly consider Turkey have openly stated that there is no way they'd go there just now. Doesn't matter how much I try to convince them that Syria is hundreds of miles away, they go by what they read in the press and make there minds up that Turkey = trouble.
It's their loss, but also the bar, restaurant and hotel owners loss as well unfortunately.
JF

visa free travel throughout the EU
I wonder if that'll mean the end of visas for travel to Turkey for EU members.
-
The way things stand, Spain and Greece are going to be heaving next year and there'll be a lot of empty hotel rooms along the south coast of Turkey.
Not just from Turkey - Egypt and the entire tourist trade from Tunisia.
-
We are usually booked for two trips for next year, as yetw e have booked our May/June trip but at the moment are holding fire on booking a following trip at the end of the year, we will see what happens with it all.
-
Naturally, people will not wish to give up their two weeks in the sun. But it is surely folly to assume that a Spanish Beach will be any safer than a Tunisian one in 2016. In fact the opposite may be the case.
-
Good ol' H. Always looking on the brightside. ;)
-
We are booked but our friends have decided not to come even though they have paid for the flights! So sad.
-
The area will be short of Russian tourist as well, present situation continuing of course.

Storm in a cay cup. 8)

We like many own our own place out there, but have not booked our flights yet
-
Well, it looks like every cloud has a silver lining.
Our oldest daughters University course was under threat due to funding issues - on Friday just gone it was announced that funding is now guaranteed for a further five years.
Her course... Central and Eastern European Studies with Russian.
An impressive bit of forward thinking by whatever funding council allocates the funds.

We aren't hesitating on Turkey next year. Flights are booked for May and then July for an 8 week summer stay. I'd only not go if UK Government said don't travel there and I'd only hesitate if I thought I could get flights cheaper by waiting. Trying to predict where any terrorist organisation may or may not hit is beyond my crystal ball - as I've found to my cost by trying to predict lottery results! Sadly security measures will be stepped up everywhere - we went to the theatre in London on Saturday and had a guy wave a metal detector in our general direction. Wherever you look to book is a risk, terrorists look to see where they can cause the most chaos and maybe Turkey has enough chaos of its own at the moment. I'm getting the suncream, the hat and the sunglasses ready for a summer of sunshine rather than a summer of hiding indoors.
-
We just bought apartment in June we have booked flights new year and April totally agree with stortman will still travel unless government say otherwise as he says where are we safe from terrorists
-
Its not safe anywhere,so what do we do stay in behind locked doors.
No way, we will be out next year never fear.
-
We will be out in May & all summer, if people stay away, then they have won part of the battle, from a personal point they are NOT interfering with my hols :) :) :)
And only signed for my villa in Oct. I will never get any use out of it if I don't go :D
-
Worried? Concerned? at situation currently in Turkey .. nah, My only concern is getting over the Lancashire border a week tomorrow for my TC flight to Antalya and then over the hills to Fethiye.

If you came to a beach resort town in Turkey, enjoyed yourself, and didn't read the newspaper or the news stories on the internet, would you even notice any difference?
-
You might if half the hotels and restaurants had closed down due to economic hardship. Why does everyone seem to think this is about terrorism?

Not good! Hope it's not why we all fear:

Not good news at all. Hope no serious casualties. :(

No doubt Daesh will claim it.

Turkish media suggesting it was a pipe bomb, and only minor injuries.
JF
-
This looks more like a transformer blowing up than a pipe bomb - maybe we're all (everyone, media included) jumping to the obvious, and potentially mistaken, conclusion. Bear in mind, it was adjacent to the metro line.

-
Yep, looks exactly like a transformer going up - wonder if Reg will decide it should be a bomb so he can blame some group or other.
-
It seems that some people are definitely worried about the situation in Turkey - I've had 2 booking cancelled for my villa for next summer! When they see horrific news on the TV or in the papers, they assume all of Turkey is affected.
-
Yes DryPete, some friends of ours who have a villa and have let it out for a number of years now have only got 1 booking so far for next season. By now, most of the school summer holiday has already been booked.
-
.. and flight prices are definitely falling as a result.
I looked at 2xMan- Dal with Monarch before the trouble and they were £333 each with Leeds Bradford even more.
I can now get L/B for £302 each for the same dates.
I assume as more decide to go elsewhere that they will drop even further and flights will be cancelled and consolidated.
-
If prices do fall easyJet customers can get a rebate voucher for same flight-lower price. Voucher valid against your next flight (within time limit).
-
Your not safe anywhere.
Come on everyone support!
Get out to Turkey ;D
-
It's not us few on here who need convincing, Saga Louts, I think we are all pretty much determined to still holiday there come hell or high water, it is "them out there" who need convincing. :(
-
Wish I could see some cheaper flights..manchester to dlm June 21stish for 10 to 14nights.
-
booked to come out christmas not really worried life has to go on
-
It's not us few on here who need convincing, Saga Louts, I think we are all pretty much determined to still holiday there come hell or high water, it is "them out there" who need convincing. :(
Yep, I think that pretty much covers it. Like all the other incidents in the past, we all carry on regardless but those with no particular link or bond with Turkey don't have the same desire or resolve. You can't blame them either really.
We shall book our flights and support our friends by staying in their hotels, eating in their restaurants, hiring their boats etc.
But we go in October, and I just hope they all make it through till then - it is going to be a very tough season. Probably the toughest in decades.
-
We have booked all our flights for next year.May,July and Sept :).I don't think i'm at any more risk in Turkey, than travelling to work on the train everyday in London.
-
Agreed, probably safer.
-
All booked, I will feel much safer in Turkey! I remember people telling me that it was dangerous where I was
traveling to, in the Car on my way to the Airport I heard about the IRA Bomb at M&S in Manchester....where Memsahib told
me she was going with a friend to change a jumper .......................nowhere today is really safe. (Was pretty relieved when I called from the Airport and she answered the Phone! .....in the days before I had a mobile! :) )
-
Just heard from a friend of mine who has just returned from the Algarve area in Portugal for a week
a pint of beer one euro !!!! and a bottle of real good house wine and in a restaurant 4 pounds !!!!
its the same sunshine there as in Turkey
Turkey is up against from all directions next year and not just from recent events >:(
-
Yes that's right - a bottle of beer, a (decent) glass of red or white, and soft drinks ALL one euro in many bars and restaurants in Portugal.
-
It does sound tempting but . . . :-\
-
and importantly much cheaper air fares ... but not for us.. we are happily commited to Turkey, warts `n` all and whatever else gets thrown at it... ;)
-
Not that much different in Spain to Portugal. Beer €1 or €1.50 depending on the setting, wine by the glass prices similar - bottle of wine with a meal from €6, and even at that price it's generally a decent bottle.
Like Turkey, you can pay a lot more for both drinks and food but as far as the wine is concerned, the price v quality comparison is a hands down winner for both Spain and Portugal.
Menu del dia (menu of the day) can be almost as cheap as Turkish locanta food with the bonus of cheap alcohol thrown in.
We're heading off to Andalucia tomorrow and flights, including hold baggage both ways, were about £110pp. Add to that day time flights and no visa issues it's not difficult to see why folks are deserting Turkey in droves, terrorism fears aside.
Don't get me wrong, I'm looking forward to stuffing my face in places like Cummhuriyet Bir and Geritli in Istanbul, plus maybe a bite in Yengec and Pasa Kebab if I make it as far as Fethiye next year - but I'm not your typical "tourist" without who many establishments in the resorts will struggle next year.
JF

I think there is of course great pressure on Turkey as a destination from the likes of those mentioned - Spain, Portugal - but also Greece is back being humble after years of being arrogant and expensive. Saving grace for Turkey may be that it is sometimes viewed as similar to other Muslim countries like Tunisia and Egypt - and there are two huge no go areas that people might have chosen but can't - and if they are relaxed about those places Turkey could scoop some up.
The other big problem for Turkey is that we are between 4 and 10 months from people's holidays and things do not look good today. One earthquake, riot, bomb, shooting in the mean time - well, that will potentially be the killer blow for Turkey 2016. :(
-
It is simply not possible to say that you will be safer traveling to Spain, Greece, Tunisia,Turkey, Manchester or South Uist in 2016.
-
I don't think anyone said that it was?
-
I think the words to describe other holiday destinations ie Portugal, Spain ,Greece and others is "" less dangerous""""
-
but also Greece is back being humble after years of being arrogant and expensive.
Went to Greece [Skiathos island] in September and found it unexpectedly and significantly more expensive than Turkey.

I remember being in Turkey after an earthquake, and it was ghostly quiet all season.

#ComeToTurkey otherwise we will be screwed next year!

I don't doubt it. What I meant was more that Greece isn't as expensive as itself previously :)

I remember being in Turkey after an earthquake, and it was ghostly quiet all season.
I remember being in Turkey during an earthquake.. I thought it was a digger coming down the road when the ground started to shake and when the water in the pool started to move, I realised what it was. However, did not put us off, just scared us a bit at the time.
Off to Tenerife tomorrow, so will see what the prices are like there.

I don't see how cheap Spain Portugal or Greece has anything to do with making up someone's mind as to going there for their yearly holiday to be honest. My hubby and I work bloody hard to enjoy our 2 of if we are lucky 3 weeks away a year.We want to go somewhere that we want to visit and enjoy, not what is the cheapest place to go to to save us money. Because of the IS things have changed the holiday market and Turkey is one of the losers as is Tunisia and Egypt. It seems to me that the ones most frightened on this forum are the ones that own properties in Turkey and they will lose out on rental income. Not all rent out I know but a lot do. Spain and Portugal and even Greece now seem very good alternative to them I'm sure because they are cheap as was Turkey when they bought their villas and apartments. I imagine losing £500 and up a week is a big loss when you are use to it all through the summer season in Turkey. Don't know if after reading this if I should post it because of the backlash I'm bound to get here goes Alix.

Really? I think we got through to the late 8th & 9th page of discussing this before anyone even mentioned renting their property out. Even then, it was fairly matter of fact to show that people are scared and all quite calmly stated.
It seems that some people are definitely worried about the situation in Turkey - I've had 2 booking cancelled for my villa for next summer! When they see horrific news on the TV or in the papers, they assume all of Turkey is affected.
Yes DryPete, some friends of ours who have a villa and have let it out for a number of years now have only got 1 booking so far for next season. By now, most of the school summer holiday has already been booked.
Hardly the words of "the most frightened ones" :D
-
Sitting on (temporarily) our terrace in Granada right now, after having a really nice selection of tapas and several glasses of rioja (€2 for roughly 175-200ml) I'm not sure I could make an unbiased comment in the Spain, Portugal & Greece v Turkey argument.
Got a bottle of imported Cuban honey rum for €15 on the way home, for a wee nightcap, and it crossed my mind that there'll be another hike in alcohol tax on the 15th in Turkey...

If you can't see that price makes a big difference to someone with no loyalty to any particular country then maybe you've got too much money to spend :)
No backlash, maybe different opinions, but don't let that stop you posting yours.

Yeah we also experienced an earthquake in Fethiye. Didn't bother me at all and certainly didn't stop me going back.
Have become disillusioned with the country now though, off to Cape Town for 3 weeks.

Enjoy - you will be safe as houses there.....
-
For sure haha, and flying via Paris too!
-
For £262.79 for 2 people for 2 weeks end June beg July with 15kg luggage day flights with pegasus..(single flights in and out)
-
coming late to this but for the first time in nearly 30 years of hols in Calis we are hesitant! We have booked our hotel for £1 and its not due to be paid until May however we have booked and paid for flights and although not cheap they were at good times and from Leeds ! I would be prepared to lose them though if things dont look up! Depending on the situation we might be advised not to travel in which case I might get it back but if I dont I wont lose sleep. Better safe than sorry! :-\
-
Well we will be going unless we are told not to by the Foreign Office.
Hopefully 6 weeks next year (well why not?).
-
So, small tapas with bread and olives for free to start with. A beer a glass of wine then two huge crusty bread rolls one with cheese and chicken breast, one with bacon, gammon and cheese then one more beer and one more wine and then two lovely cofffes right by the harbour with lovely views and in the heat. 17.00 Euro. We thought it would be more expensive because of the venue here in Tenerife.. Good value with thought. Also, lovely to walk around the shops and no one following you and trying to sell you things. Have to say to, getting through the airport was a breeze and picking up a car no problem.
-
Are you in Los Cristianos Jacqui? We haven't been for a few years and are considering another trip.
-
It's the cockroaches that put me off Tenerife... never seen as many in my life.. hate them..
-
No staying in Puerto De La Cruz. Have not seen any cockroaches, just saw a lizard on our terrace this morning. That is all the wild life we have seen. However, have seen plenty of cockroaches in Turkey.
-
Have to agree with Mercury - see loads of cockroaches in Tenerife and Lanzarote but very few in Calis - except when I am sat out on the terrace at night quietly tapping on my laptop. They seem to home in on me :-\ ???
-
I remember one night seeing loads of cockroaches in Calis around where we have our house, they were running around the gardens. Also when we stayed at the Sundial, there was a huge one in our bedroom.
I will report back if I see any in this part of the Island, but up to now Cockroach Gate is Nil.
-
What are the table napkins like there Jacqui.? ;) ;)
-
Nice tonight in the Fish Restaurant overlooking the harbour and even nice packets of lemon wipes. What more could you ask? Also could not believe the most expensive bottle of wine on the wine list was 20 Euros, it was lovely.
(http://s17.postimg.org/zdiql3o97/image.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/zdiql3o97/)
-
What more could you ask?
Schweppes Slimline Tonic ?
-
No, they don't have it here either, but Lidl's up the road have a nifty line in flavoured tonics.
-
Wow is Teneriffe sitting outside weather in the evening in December Jacqui? :)
-
Yes Karin, I did have a cardi on a bit later, but Phil was fine. It was a very nice night I think it was cooler for me because we were right next to the harbour and the sea wall, but when we walked up into town to get a taxi, lots of people sitting out at bars and restaurants.
I love the way all the spaces around the town have poinsettias planted in reds, whites and pinks, they look so pretty, image planting them outside in the U.K. in December??

Just booked our September 2016 flights to Calis.

All booked May/June and Sep/Oct

Yes Stoop, me and you seem to know about the cockroaches. :) I remember seeing so many of them running around the gardens of local houses and when we walked up our path and put the lights on they all scattered. We had a few in our house about 4 years ago, we would go down in the morning and find them. The last few years we have not seen any, thank goodness, because I hate them.
-
Hi Chris see you both in 2016 8) :-*
-
Forget Spain, Portugal and Greece - Fethiye area may suffer from a closer rival in 2016 - Antalya. Vast numbers of hotel rooms might be vacant due to it's popularity with our Russian friends, meaning possible price slashing.

We were playing Sequence on our veranda and a big bugger landed on the board. I swatted it away and it flew over Maggie's head.
About 15 minutes later she realised it was down her back!
Screams a plenty and that was just me ;)
-
Yes, us too, we saw cockroaches flying around... Horrible we hate them, but we spoke to a local Turkish guy who told we had to get used to them.

Liking you once would have been acceptable, three times??? Suffice to say laptop was being hormonal!!!! On a serious note, some of us are here because we have nothing to go back to. I'm an economic migrant.....came here because our state pensions could go a heck of a lot further. Thanks to a bad investment, we lost our savings, but still have our home and all bills paid. This is our home, and we are happy.

Well said Cleo.
This is our home, and we are happy. Couldn't agree more.

If you are troubled by cockroaches in your place in Turkey there is a simple solution; build a new place. That is what Erdogan did. Of course it helps if you have access to $165million of somebody else's money to do the job.

He's managed to get the cockroaches to work for him though.

We never saw more than 2 cockroaches in all the 7 years we lived there.. I would never get used to them I hate the horrible things...
-
I remember driving along the road in Calis in the evening and Phil had opened his window and one flew in and landed in the back of the car....There was a right scramble by me to get out when we arrived at the house.

already booked for next year and going to Egypt for the new year

Well we booked last night due to prices actually going UP since last week with Monarch from Leeds.
Only cost us £42 after the Tesco vouchers kicked in but still over £300 each!!!! Having said that we can save about £40 on petrol and £120 on parking v Manchester.
Mind you - just over six weeks is a bonus :)
-
Six weeks.!! That's one hell of a flight. Any stops on the way.?
-
Six weeks.!! That's one hell of a flight. Any stops on the way.?
Nah - it's via the space station ;)
-
You guys! ;)
-
Just booked 8 nights at the beginning of May, flights to/from Gatwick (Easyjet out & Monarch back) + B&B with Mete at The Golden Moon, £200 each, good enough for me! No room for any goodies though, only booked 1 x 20kg bag between the 2 of us, let's hope it's warm enough for shorts ;)
-
That's a coincidence Supercabby, I was thinking about you and Lance yesterday.
-
I am still determined that political affairs in Turkey won't get in the way of our holiday in 2016.
Ridiculous flight prices might though.
-
2 more sleeps....Can't wait!!! You'll have to wait for the pics......
-
Flights booked for a week in April & 2 weeks in July, will hopefully book for 2 weeks in September at a later date. Usual comments from people who don't know turkey about the safety etc, can't wait myself.
-
Hello all just thought I would share thoughts having spent a very enjoyable Christmas in Istanbul with no problems at all.
Mrs B & I had not been to Istanbul for over 25 years so with an intervening period of political uncertainty, earthquakes in the 1990's etc. etc. was not too sure what to expect.
Regular Turkish Airlines flights from our nearest airport Bham and some great Christmas deals prompted a long overdue visit with no fears or trepidation.
Friendly reception from all we met Hoteliers, tour staff, bar owners and restaurateurs even if some of the prices were more London than Calis!
Security at Ataturk Airport very tight and thorough so gave extra confidence.
Will we be in Calis? You bet!
Just sorting out our first visit for April/May 2016 asap.
-
Just booked for three adults with Monarch from Luton - 1 June to 15 June: total £700 and that included hold baggage for three and annual insurance for one (also including extra legroom for one - we two get extra legroom for free). Hope the weather will be hot but not too hot!
-
That's great ArtyMar......Happy New Year...see you in June...x
-
I'm all booked up for June just booked it tonight so here's hoping all is ok, prices are not any cheaper, I emailed the hotel I stayed at last year as they have changed agents and was told if I couldn't find it I could book direct with hotel , I thought right I will just book direct then hotel gets all the money without agent fees, how wrong can you be ? price that came back just for the hotel was double what I paid for a package holiday with everything included last year? so I booked the package again this year. doesn't make sense does it ? I'm just waiting for the email from hotel asking me to bring some Alcohol for them !
-
Just got a taxi home in UK with an Afghani taxi driver who has been here 10 yrs who reckons Afghanistan is now safer than the UK or Turkey !

3 sets of flights booked for this year now - nearly 40 nights in total.

Yeah, I remember Geordieland was a violent place when I lived there in the sixties.
-
Not hesitant - awaiting approval on my holiday dates so I can book our Dalaman flights for 2016. We had such a fine week last October that it was a pretty easy decision. I just hope the season is good and all the businesses make it through till we get there.
-
Is he going back there then SteveA.
-
Don't think he is rushing back anytime soon !
Geordieland as you well know it Colwyn is a beautiful part of the world bursting at the seams with sophisticated culture.
-
I have just booked a week in June at the Nevada B&B, flying with Jet2 from Manchester and the whole invoice is £310 (and £15 of that is to select seats!).
-
Booked flights for May and will be looking for flights later in the year
-
Flights and accommodation for both 2016 holidays booked.
The cost of the flights (Jet2 from Glasgow) were lower than 2015 for the same periods. Not by much but every little helps.
Cannot imagine never being able to return to Calis.
-
Same here John, prices for Jet2 from both EDI & Glasgow surprisingly cheaper than last year for our dates. That means it saves me the cost of a hotel and driving 550 miles to Manchester or Leeds/Bradford and all the time that takes.
For flights at £125 each (and we need 4) it saves us a fortune normally to head down to Englandshire, but this year Scotland prices are down a bit and MCR/LBA are quite a bit higher.
-
That'll be startling news for one our ladies....
-
Well that's me booked for early June and end of August and slightly cheaper flights than last year.
-
We were fortunate to have booked 2 visits for this year last November and we had no hesitation at all.
Will also try and fit in another along the way as well
-
Ill br out 18th May till 10th Jul Flights for 2 booked. Other half coming home for a couple of weeks in middle. Not booked hese yet. Then both back out for2-3 weeks September. Still to decide dates.
Cant wait :angel 8) ;D

Well they do keep sort of shooting themselves in the foot.
I read an article last week where it was reported that non-married couples should not show affection in public. Here's one report. There are others.
https://www.rt.com/news/328130-turkey-public-displays-affection/

You think thats bad? Try this one (http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/turkeys-diyanet-denies-responsibility-in-controversial-fatwa-on-fathers-lust-for-daughter.aspx?PageID=238&NID=93631&NewsCatID=393):
One anonymous user asked whether a father having sexual desire for his daughter would result in the cancellation of his marriage from a religious perspective.
The Diyanet posted an answer stating that there is a difference of opinion on the matter among Islam’s different schools of thought.
“For some, a father kissing his daughter with lust or caressing her with desire has no effect on the man’s marriage,” the answer said, referencing various religious sources.
Since this was highlighted in the media, they've backtracked and said the answer was distorted in an attempt to discredit the organisation. Well bugger me mate, you're doing a fine job yourselves.

rt.com is owned by the Russian Government. After the Turks shot down their plane before Christmas the Russians weren't exactly pleased. Would RT.com have published something similar when thousands of Russians were going to Turkey on holiday?

It wasn't just rt.com, this story has been in the Turkish media as well - with varying degrees of support/derision for the proclamation.

Are their barmen still allowed to shag British girls in the toilets?

Only if the "girls" have booked All Inclusive.

And the aformentioned couple are not engaged. The proclamation only refers to engaged couples. The rest can go at it like rabbits.!!
-
Getting slightly back on topic...
It does appear that all us Turkey veterans won't be put off by current/recent events. But it won't make or break based on whether we come or not.
It's the "anywhere hot and cheap" people who will - and I read many of those might add "except Turkey/Muslim countries" to that.
-
Annual holidays are precious to most people and take a year to save/pay for. With so many warmer, cheaper alternatives who can blame them.
The safety of their loved ones is a big concern to most.
-
I would love to book but can't until the present Mrs H gets back to work and arranges her holidays. :( :( :(
-
I have booked 3 trips out to Calis this year and maybe squeeze in a long weekend for the 4th one.

i dont do hot and cheap i do warm and comfortable

We have recently had an email from the agents we use to deal with our rentals and they have advised that based on previous years bookings at this time of year their current level for 2016 is down to about 50%.
They have indicated that the usual split of renters is about one third Turkish, Russian and British.
British enquirers are down considerably with Russian even worse.
If this is indicative of what is happening in the wider area and with little prospect of any improvement it looks like it will be a very testing time for all those involved in the tourist industry in Turkey this year.
I hope this changes but I cannot see it happening in the short term.
-
I was beginning to ponder that, from an expat's point of view, it must be odd to live in a place that so many people think is too dangerous to visit. But then I remembered that the road Hilary and I walk down and back on our twenty minute evening stroll to our favourite local (Moroccan) restaurant was once highlighted in a New York Times tourism guide as the most dangerous street in Europe! Am I bovered?

We've booked June and September as usual. And can't wait!

Think a lot more people will be Hesitant about coming to Turkey this year after this mornings bomb attack in 'Istanbul.
-
Sadly I'm out, I've been trying to talk the OH into booking again for this year but she has been adamant that she won't go , I've been trying to use all my persuasive charms on her and got no where and with things like this happening on a sadly more frequent basis I have no chance of changing her mind
-
Well we are still going (at the moment) but I think our planned trip to Istanbul might be delayed a while.
-
We have recently come back from Spain and lost count of the number of people talking about Turkey and saying how dangerous it is now... Whether we like it or not this is the perception... Someone said to us "ooh. You must be so happy to be out of there now?" .. We also bumped into 2 Calis residents and another couple who frequently holiday in Ovacik and Olu Deniz.. They are giving it a miss to see how things "pan out".
-
We are coming as it stands but it cannot be denied that this was an attack on tourists and the Turkish tourism industry.
If that continues I won't pay to bring my family into danger. Much as we value our week in Calis, I am responsible for their safety, and for providing a relaxed holiday.
I do not want to feel relieved when I get off a dolmus in one piece.

HM Gov travel advice has been updated but only to incorporate recent news. No change in the advice which continues to recommend no travel within 10 km of Syrian border and only essential travel in most close-by provinces (Sirnak, Mardin, Sanliurfa, Gaziantep, Kilis, Hatay, Siirt, Diyarbakir and Hakkari and also Tunceli. In addition, tourists advised to avoid large demonstrations in major cities. No special advice is offered for either Istanbul or Ankara except to follow instructions from local security authorities.
-
It was reported yesterday that Germany's Foreign Ministry's Website was warning " that further violent clashes and terrorist attacks
are expected across Turkey." Germany's TUI travel are offering free cancellations.
-
It's not looking good - I mentioned in another topic that the flights I was watching went UP after the attack on Turkish tourism. Well, I decided to take a look at how things might be looking, booking wise.
I know it's far from specific science and at best only a broad glimpse - but when I pretended I wanted to pre-book my seats (so I could see how many people already have), on a return flight that is 198 seats (33 rows x 6), just three have been pre-booked. Normally they are scattered across and along the plane in fairly significant numbers.
That sounds pretty bad :(
-
Expect more flight amalgamations and cancellations from the charter operators, which I suspect will push folks (who know the score) towards Easyjet and Jet2.
How it will affect pricing I'm really not sure - thinking back to 2003 when GW2 kicked off, I seem to remember flights to Istanbul being pretty cheap for a few months.
JF
-
Some people are definitely concerned with the security situation in turkey, as I've now had 3 cancellations for 2016 holidays at my villa in Calis.
-
We still intend going unless HMG advise against it or Jet2 cancel our flights and we cannot arrange alternatives.
-
Although this is not Calis related, it is Turkey related and probably relative to this post.
We are going to Icmeler this year. We booked it in October and decided to go unless HO advice meant that we couldn't. Today I had a message from the owner of the apartments we are staying at (we've been there many times) telling us that today he had an "urgent meeting" with Thomson regarding the decrease in bookings for 2016 and the increasing number of cancellations.
Our friends we usually holiday with are still undecided and out of curiosity, I entered their details onto the Thomson website as a "bogus booking" identical to our booking to see if prices were coming down to reflect what Thomson were telling the hoteliers.
It seems not.
Our booking done in October was £888
The same booking today would be £1166
TotallyConfused.com
-
If the price of flights continue to rise then anyone just wanting to book a flight may be better off booking a package, I'm sure there will be lots of cancellations on package holidays
-
Today I had a message from the owner of the apartments we are staying at (we've been there many times) telling us that today he had an "urgent meeting" with Thomson regarding the decrease in bookings for 2016 and the increasing number of cancellations.
I wouldn't take Thomson (or any other major tour operator) telling hotel/apartment owners that things are bad as evidence that things are bad.
Just as likely it's them taking bad news as an opportunity to screw the owners down (again).
-
We have monarch flights booked and paid for , for June. We paid £1 deposit on the Manas park ( now our place is sold) . I'm giving it til April and will take a view then . At worst I'll lose the cost of the flights but if things deteriorate there's no way we'll be going.
-
Same here Cavfan booked for May but if things deteriorate I will cancel .
-
It is a little surprising that so many say that they will be going unless the FCO advise against it. This is surely a decision WE need to take, it isn't safe/unsafe because the Foreign Office say so.
If we don't end up going it will be because we have weighed up the situation and made a balanced decision. Not because some government department who are no more specialists in Turkey than they are in any other country in the World said so.
-
The problem is that if the FCO issue advice against travel, your travel insurance becomes invalid.
It wouldn't be the first time we've been somewhere the FCO advise against going, but travelling with kids and no insurance is something we'd never do.
JF
-
I agree with all of that - my point is that we, the people who know Turkey, should decide whether it is safe to go or not. If the FCO say it isn't, maybe we think it is (insurance point taken). And if the FCO decide it is safe, we might know better.
Making the choice based on what the FCO think seems ludicrous to me (insurance point taken ;) )
-
Funnily enough, I agree with all of that (wot you said), and am happy to take responsibility for my own safety irrespective of FCO advice. Unfortunately the type of person we want to see visiting Turkey wont - if the FCO say dont go, they wont.
So I suppose your question is "do we, as regular travellers to Turkey know better than the FCO?". Maybe we do, maybe we don't - but the problem is that the FCO always err on the side of caution and it is their view that insurers go by.
One thing I do know is that if the FCO advise against travel to Turkey/Istanbul and I have a meeting scheduled at the office then I wont be missing it over a travel advisory. I don't think I'll be hanging about places like Taksim Square, but will still travel.
JF
-
going may/june and in aug/sep and then eygpt dec/jan nothing will put me off
-
I'm sure there are scenarios that might
-
I assume that the FCO are privy to more information on security threats than members of CBF (or other forums :)).
For me it's the first responsibility of government to protect it's people and if that includes advice on foreign travel then so be it.
It is surely reasonable for insurance companies to take that advice or impose premiums accordingly. Who else can they base their judgments on.
That having been said, the FCO have as much of a clue as to where the next attack will happen as I do.
-
There’s a lot to take in to consideration when traveling abroad especially if you have a family in tow even without having to think about terrorism so I can see why people won’t go. The wife and I were thinking of going mid-march but we would have to pass through Istanbul but after what happened we may reconsider which will be disappointing as I love Istanbul
-
I too love Istanbul but I don't think I will ever go back there.

We have already booked and payed for our flights to Dalaman. We have not yet booked where we want to stay but hope it is in Calis. With two daughter we are now very wary of coming to Turkey because of what is happening. To be honest my hubby says its better if we don't look at this site as its biased to Turkey. Not sure what he means but can guess from reading responses to this topic. It would be nice to read some good and encouraging news for a change rather than the dismal. Will be our first time to Turkey and want to look forward to it not scared of it as is what is beginning to happen.

What exactly does he mean this this site "biased to Turkey"?
Biased in a positive way to it, or biased against it?

Ok. Bye.

What he means is that a lot of members have properties and financial interests in Turkey. So will always favour holidays in Turkey. For people like ourselves we have to listen to the advice of the FCO. Some of you have raised concerns but others have not. What are we to think and what message are you wanting us to believe.
-
I think you will find messages from many people who want to go, and many from people who are concerned and might not go. Maybe that is biased to Turkey where you come from.
-

With respect, it is entirely your decision but if you have listened to the advice of the FCO then you will go.
People on here have expressed their opinions which is surely what an open forum is all about. You surely didn't expect all members to have the same view.
When all said and done "you pays your money and you takes your chance"
-
I have property in Turkey and love the country but if the FCO advised travelling to said country i would not go, property or no property there! we would choose another place to travel to...
-
...but where is safe?
We are no more at risk in Turkey than we are anywhere else in the world, or indeed here at home.
-
Agreed - but it depends on how things go. You can get blown up anywhere, but (as mentioned before) if there is a series of explosions on dolmuses for example, there's no way I'm paying to expose my family to that risk.
-
Indeed Anne - as the tragic events in Burkina Faso demonstrate.
-
I too love Istanbul but I don't think I will ever go back there.
Does that mean you'll never go to London, Paris, Madrid etc etc?
Nah I'll still go to London

I suppose if we never go anywhere where there is a risk of trouble, then we will be consigned to the back garden for holidays and the like ;)
I intend to go where I want (within reason, no point in being blase) But our flights are booked for May & July and we will be landing at Dalaman come whatever, then it will be the usual fantastic time as each previous year 8) 8) 8)

I do not own a property in Turkey or have any financial dealings there, so I am not bias of those grounds. I choose to come to Calis because I feel as safe there as anywhere else, lets face it, is anywhere really 100% safe anymore - sadly the answer is not really, even here in the UK anything could happen at anytime, but you can't put your life on hold worrying about what might happen. So unless I am told otherwise I shall be in Calis for two weeks end of Sept/beginning of Oct - the flights are already booked.
-
From my point of view I was looking to come out back end of February or beginning of March to do that the only flights I could find cheap enough where from Stanstead to Sabiha Gokcen then on to Dalaman (Pegasus) there had already been a reported explosion at the airport and then one in Istanbul itself so it made me think twice. After speaking with the wife it seems that I was worried on her behalf and she’s not that bothered so just looking at her and my shift patterns and will book by the end of the week happy days :D

We are booked for 2016 :)
-
Good on you - hopefully more people will follow suit.
-
Well said Anne.
We are booked and actually booked for a longer trip than ever this time, due to early retiremnet here in the UK, as said where are you safe! We are going to enjoy our trips to Turkey, but yes, there are areas we would probably not stay in, you just need to be sensible and aware while you are there.
And enjoy yourselves, life can be cut short in a flash, and not by terrorists
-
We have booked for this year and looking forward to it.
-
Same here
-
Most regulars will return, but sadly that wont be enough... Turkish tourism needs new visitors... numbers were already dropping in 2014/15........ 2016 will be the worst season for decades unfortunately :-(
-
Absolutely my thoughts Sleuth.
-
My concern is the 90/180 day rule...personally I will only stay in Turkey for 90 days and will spend the rest of the summer in Greece. Yes I know it's possible to get a short term residents permit, but for me the hassle, additional cost and buying useless Turkish health insurance for a year (I was not refunded when I left last year) is outweighed by the fact I can swan off to Greece and just spend the maximum 90 days in the country.
-
Life is so tough sometimes ;)
-
I'm going to Turkey in June and Portugal in September. I think I'm starting to turn into Stoop! If I start talking as though I'm chewing a brick and pronouncing the as t' Hilary has promised to shoot me.
-
Nowt wrong wi' that Colwyn! ;)

Anyway ... I'd be hesitant about going to Yorkshire but don't have a problem with Turkey at the moment. The first year I went to Turkey was 1997 at the height of the Turk-Kurd civil war when over 8000 people died, 158 of whom were civilians. Everything seems quite quiet in comparison.
-
Careful Colwyn - I might make you wear a cap if I see you :)
-
Hesitant on Turkey 2016?
Nope not us......Visiting Turkey - Bodrum in July, but coming via Kos . Flights direct to Bodrum from Edinburgh for the 4 of us was going to cost roughly £1100 so decided to book Newcastle to Kos £580 then ferry over to Bodrum 120 euro return ,Even booking apartments with 1 night Kos ,12 nights Bodrum then 1 night in Kos, is working out cheaper than 14 nights in Kos. For us the thought of never visiting Turkey this year did not enter our minds, infact my hubby is going to Bodrum in April on his own to do a few history sightseeing tours that he says he can never do in the heat of summer with the kids in tow, rather him than me tbh as all I see is a pile of rocks compared to his interest in it ;D
