At last this desolate site has been cleared and renovated. And if it is going to be used for cultural events . I do not see a problem.

Really? Rock concerts at Stonehenge with people clambering all over the rocks - fill in the gaps with giant laser cut stones to make a full, proper circle. That's the way forward for these "desolate sites".

Sorry Apollo but your comment is quite ridiculous...

I thought that we were discussing Fethiye. The renovation has cleared the rubbish tip, which it had become, and created a usable site.

Turks don't do "sympathetic restoration".  Never have, never will.  Their ruins, their choice.

Actually not their ruins, and maybe that's the point, if you see what I mean.

I do know what you mean.  However possession being nine tenths etc etc means they can do as they please with not only the theatre in Fethiye, but many historically important buildings and sites throughout Turkey.

We've owned two properties that were considered to be "of archaeological significance" and the criteria used in defining this status is so flawed it could only happen in Turkey!

Here's a few classics from the current custodians of Turkeys history:

10 urban heritage sites Istanbul lost in 2000s

This article by Ariana Ferentinou, where she interviews Dr. Ferudun Özgümüş, Associate Prof. of Byzantine Art at Istanbul University is another classic.  I mean, if he cant tell the difference between 13th century Byzantine architecture and 17th cenury Ottoman architecture, what hope is there...

Renovation vs. restoration

There was an article last year in one of the English online newspapers about the (un)sympathetic restoration work being carried out in Turkey, I cant find right now but maybe someone remembers it and could post it.
