if anybody knows anyone who was using or staying at nazar garden hotel 30th aug to 5th september or knows any of the bosses at this hotel will verify what happened as this is where this couple was staying and it was common knowledge of them getting robbed in calis. i dont know the finer details of how it happened but the guy was at an atm machine and was distracted and someone did steal his card and he stated that his bank was emptied of £1000.on the day they were leaving for the airport they were just informing newcomers to be vigilant.

ATM's will only give 600 TL per day, so as to stop theft, unless you have a prior agreement, if this couple only had £1,000 in their account it's unlikely they would have an agreement to take the lot in one go..  I still find stories like this really hard to believe and have decided only to take notice of first hand accounts.

the scam.... the gang usually 2/3 spot the target.
 follow to atm.
gang member 1 approaches to the left waits and watches till victim has put in pin num, whilst distracting them with conversation that the machine is faulty and that u should retrieve your card enabling them to be  close enuff to see the keyboard,
gang member number 2 hits the return card option from the right hand side and is off with the card.
leaving the victim totally flustered overwhelmed and confused as to what just happened as they thought they were being helped.and presuming the machine has swallowed the card.
the card is then used immediately at the next cashpoint the gang finds available and takes the max daily amount whatever that may be. leaving zero time for the card to be cancelled.
i think thats why we have cctv at most atm,s in the uk now. these guys are very fast!

Still doesn't explain how they got all their money out. However I do have an account that allows £500 per day but it's not an account you can open on the high street (I'm sure they are available with other banks though). Maybe they had a similar one? That might explain how they got the money out - after all if it was stolen at say 8pm it's only 4 hours to the next day - maybe no time to cancel the card and two lots taken out easily.

I have an account that allows me to take out £600 per day, and I still can't get more than 600 lira out in Turkey.

I'd have to check with my banker (that's the wife) but I'm sure we have taken out more than 600ytl in one go.

Just checked and 600ytl is the most we took out in one go in one day. So it would take around 4 days to get £1000 out!

the card could still be used in stores/internet/petrol stations with a valid pin numba, regardless of how much was taken at the cashpoint.
