The rediscovery of Vinyl
« on: January 17, 2010, 20:01:55 PM »
Just thought I d share what is probably a middle aged ,Top Gear watching bloke thing but have just got a turntable for the first time in years and dsuted off the vinyl in the loft.
My taste is more eclectic than I thought but have spent most of today listening to Bobby Darins greates,The Wall by Pink Floyd,Stevie Wonders songs in the key of life,Joe Cocker Stingray and as I write the briliant Elvis Costellos King of America.I was about to transfer them to MP3 and clean them up but something just tells me that they are better as they are,the wya they were meant to be,the sound that gives you nostalgia.I recenlty got the Beatles collection of digitally remastered clean up stuff but hae put it to one side in favour of the tinny, sctrachy crackly excellent original recordings.
I intend to listen to all ofmy records again then I will start on cassette tapes !
If anyone is interested I will keep posting what I have been listening to and maybe swap thoughts on music as its one of my most favourite things in life.

Nice idea. This might interest you. I've never really been a Moby fan but I gave this a listen due to one of my friends being one of the backing singers. Nice sound if you like the Blues and Laura Dawn has a distinctive style.

You can here all the album at the bottom of the article:

Please do - I won't miss an opportunity to plug my good friend Jamie Rae who is one of the backing singers in The Little Death. If you like country/blues/easy have a listen to her singing live at the Iridium in New York City. This is a cover of 'You Don't Know Me' and in my opinion she deserves the ovation at the end of what was an excellent set.

The guy on lead is Jerry Cherry - also worth a look up on youtube.

Love your post Steve, I took ages to move over from Vinyl to CD, in fact I still argue that something is lost in the 'clean' digital sound. However, I look at the two Ipods we have and feel amazed that the some of the songs we now download might be 30 years old but will stay in perfect condition for the rest of time no matter how many times they are played, unlike my copy of Motown Chartbusters Volume 1. God help our Grand Children !!

Get yourself one of those turntable to MP3 things and save that musical history on vinyl

I must agree that some of the digital sound is just too good and quite sanitsed. One of my fav cd's for raw sound is The Beatles Live at the BBC. I love the early Beatles stuff - before they went stereo.

I think it's more than losing the 'feel' of vinyl. it's the whole experience. Obviously my kids have no experience of vinyl(being 9 years old) but they don't really have experience of CD either. I spent a short time working for CBS Records (dull job, great discounts) and this download age really takes away a whole side of buying music. Even the smell of vinyl (ok there was a lot of vinyl to smell at CBS) was something we have now lost.

CD's are no better in a way - in "my day" you bought a single and it was small, you bought an album and you got a bigger thing for your money! Now you get nothing at all, a digital transfer - you don't even get a record shop carrier bag with one of those!

Maybe we're just getting old :D

The beauty of the digital revolution is the acres of wall space you save in housing your music collection.

My mate decorated his ceiling with old cd's - looked rather nice.
