Another Burglary
« on: July 30, 2010, 20:20:17 PM »
Hi all
just had an email from one of the other owners on our complex (Riverside) advising all owners to be aware that there are burglars about. They rent their two apartments they own during the summer months and recently have had two break ins plus one other attemted break in.
It appears that the burglars had been watching the complex to see who was staying in which apartment, they managed to turn off the electric to the apartments (by breaking in to the electric meter unit for the complex, all the apartments are clearly labelled on each meter, so they knew which one to turn off.) The guests obviously thought that there had been a power cut so went off in to Calis. This happened at around 6.30 pm. On their return a couple of hours later, they realised that someone had broken in to the two apartments on the complex (the only ones that were occupied at the time)
All the burglars were after were cash, phones and small items that can easily be disposede of.
What lengths will these people go to?
They have no regard or respect at all for other people's hard earned holiday money!
It certainly brings home the fact that even if you are just popping out down to the shop make sure all valuables are safely locked away!!
Please all take note of this and don't give them a chance to spoil your holiday.

The local Calis blacksmith must be doing well at the moment. Several of the apartments at Now Moon have had metal security grills and doors fitted lately. Our apartment also had small anti-tamper alarms on all the windows and doors.
I was informed on arrival that our Safety Deposit Box had now been bolted to the wall as the thieves did'nt find it too hard to pull it off the wall last time as the 'mastic' did'nt hold too well !!!!!

Yet again, our apartment has been broken into (3rd time now), friends were staying and they woke up to find an intruder in the bedroom beside the children. Fortunately no one was hurt, they stole £500 cash and ran away when disturbed. When will this end? My last holiday was ruined because of it and I could not slepp without my child next to me for fear of her being hurt or worse, I was really looking forward to this time as we had fitted irons to the back and side thinking that this was the most vulnerable area but it seems we are now getting them to the front as well, even though the thought of being in a place that looks like a prison does not attract me. We are coming out on the 27th and I am praying that I can enjoy my holiday with my family.

Go to homebase or argos and buy an alarm system I got a wireless yale one about £200 very easy to install, it will give you peace of mind we set ours every night, it acts as a deterrent. When you are in the UK there is no need to set it, more often than not they only come when people are there. You ned to get security bars on every window, after a while you do not notice they are there.

Agree with Mark if you go to B.&.Q. you don't need to spend a fortune you can decide what level of Alarm you need,  you can get an alarm to cover, say the first room of your home or the entrance it will cost £20.00. So you get a wall mounted battery alarm, a small device that you can keep in your pocket, or attach to your key chain, to turn the alarm on and off and also, at the moment, they are giving a personal alarm free with this kit.

Sorry to hear the bas*ards have been active again, these crimes really do have a terrible effect on quite a number of people, not only the poor sods who are the victims but also the property owners and in our case, other members of our friends and family who are due to visit. You have to tell people what has gone on and then they become nervous rather than simply relaxing and looking forward to a hard earned break, in fact people due in to our place today are considering not staying in the house and going straight into a hotel worried that someone is watching the place for new visitors and will strike again the first time they go out, it might sound irrational to some of you, but unfortunately, I can't tell them that their fears will not materialise.

I guess we have to put this into perspective, Calis now has thousands of properties and these problems are a tiny proportion of the total where your chances of being burgled are in fact very small, the impact however is massive.

I agree with Mark, and think all we can do is try and stay one step ahead, so let's start a list of what you need to do to beat these people:

Have good locks on all of the doors and windows

Fit good quality bars and gates over each window and door

Install a safe get it bolted to the floor and the wall

If your property is suitable, consider fitting wall or floor safes which can be hidden

Buy some of the very inventive products available on eBay in which to hide money and documents

Take Marks advice and fit an alarm

Use an ultra violet security marker (it won't stop anything being stolen but might help identify the thieves if goods are recovered)

Fit a security camera

Please fell free to add to the list (serious suggestions only please)

It always distresses me to hear about these type of break ins. From what i've seen and heard, iron bars at the windows are no deterrent, most are easily levered open or even pulled off leaving an expensive repair job. I believe that ones money is best spent in fitting an alarm system and regularly testing it out during day light hours when people are about.

Get a couple of timer plugs and set to turn on a lamp and a radio or tv at pre set time

Get a good insurance policy (preferably with an English speaking claims department)

If you are not resident, appoint a management company to act in your abscence
