Paying for flight only bookings
« on: December 07, 2010, 14:21:03 PM »
Hi all,

I'm about to book our flights for next summer. Am i right in thinking that if we pay on credit card we are covered if anything goes wrong whereas we wouldnt be if we paid by debit card? debit would be easier for us but if we're not protected then it'll have to be credit card as i want to cover myself after all the horror stories i've read. I'm booking with flythomascook.com.

Probably better with credit card, debit card can be used but debate about whether covered or not, remember you pay a charge for use of credit card.

We always book with credit card. Full refund when Globespan went bust last year. We know of people who lost out by using debit card.

Flythomascook will charge you for using credit card 2.5% I think.

Agreed, I used to really resent the credit card charge but now am happy enough to pay it as a sort of flight only insurance. I have heard that perhaps you are also covered when using debit cards but not much evidence to support that.

I learnt so much last year when I filed online with the small claims court to get my money back from Goldtrail(before they went bust!), you are protected to some degree with debit card payments but only if you have charge back which you have to pay to have the privilege of, think it was about £12 per month, if you have chargeback it means the payment can be reversed up to a certain time limit.Would have loved to have known the outcome of the case what a shame soft girl here filled out the online form wrong and filled in the claimant and defendant as the same person, did not realise I had done this until I phoned small claims to see how my claim was going and it was pointed out to me,unfortunatley they wanted another £35 to correct this so I did not pursue the case in the end.

Visa Debit Cards are covered by the Visa Debit Chargeback system

http://whatconsumer.co.uk/visa-debit-chargeback/

I have both a UK Natwest and Turkish HSBC Visa debit card for which no charge is made.

Credit cards transactions are only covered if over £100.00 so you need to ensure that your ticket providor does not debit each sector separateley if any are less than this amount .
