Booked in here for a cheapie one nighter due to an early hours arrival into the UK. Only £25.  BUT on arrival found they were overbooked! However they booked us into another hotel at £120 a night at no cost paid £19   for breakfast and the taxi fare to relocate.  That deserves very top marks for service in my opinion.[^][^][^]

Although I understand that it is quite a common practice, I don't think that the initial double booking warrants top marks.

During the fiasco at Heathrow their charges went up to £199 per night. No top marks for that.

Having spoken with someone who works for a top hotel group in the UK it is as you say the norm to overbook particularly at places like Gatwick which I am not condoning  but it is the way a problem was dealt with that I do approve of.   :)
