O.K. Steve born in Ireland brought up in England played in the first one 1977, was a sub in the second 1978 and did not play in 1981.  So we can say that the 1981 European Cup Liverpool team was all British. :)   I am very proud that Liverpool have won it five times no matter who is playing for the team.  I am sure Celtic would not care either where their players came from if they won it again

But looking at the Old Firm match today, it seems nothing will ever change, Lennon bating the crowd.  I see that Su Bo is now on the list of people who are high profile to receive a parcel bomb, because she supports Celtic... What is the world coming to. :(

Well, as British as the famous Scottish Golfer Sandy Lyle, born and brought up in Shrewsbury and played football for England at school boy level.  We are all British Highlander whether you like it or not.  Dalgish, Souness, Hanson, St.John have lived in England longer than they every lived in Scotland and in the last three people's cases, nothing is stopping them moving to back to Scotland, so they must like it in England.  I was at a dinner in Aberdeen with Hanson and the Scots at our table all said they disliked him because he was now "English".

Good morning Jacqui and a Happy Easter to you :).

Clearly, we are not going to agree here, but a few last points if I may.

On my passport I am classified as a UK Citizen.

Re. Sandy Lyle:
Believe me a Scot living anywhere in the world is still a Scot, just as I assume an English person living in Aberdeenshire would, when asked what nationality they were, answer English.

Re. Me not liking being British:
A misguided comment on your part. You will to have to look very long and hard to find posts on here where I said anything that remotely suggests I don't like being British. Quite the contrary.

Re. Dalglish, Souness and Hanson moving back to Scotland:
Assumed to be a tongue-in-cheek comment therefore no response considered necessary.

All of which are not addressing the matter in hand. These are...

1. Steve Heighway is Irish not British.

2. Dalglish, Souness and Hanson are Scottish Footballers because that is the national team they represented. At the present time, there is no such thing as a British Football Team.

3. My memory is not what it used to be, but I don't remember hearing that Britain won the World Cup in 1966.

4. Kenny Dalglish is, in my opinion, rightly referred to as Liverpool's Scottish Manager as Fergie is at Man U. and as are the other Scottish Premier League Managers.

PS We seem to be off topic.

I think this is becoming boring!!You will never change the attitudes of the supporters of Celtic or Rangers, end of story. As for Neil Lennon,I am absolutely amazed that he could respond to the crowd yesterday in the way that he did.Why not smile and walk off into the tunnel. That would have made a point I think.Thank God I support Motherwell.

It may surprise you to know that after we got our Census form and it asked what Nationality we thought we were:  after long consideration, by an English woman and an Irish man we decided that we have lived in Scotland longer than in England or Ireland, it's our home it's where our children where born and where we both make a living and contribute to the economic.   So we put our considered Nationality as "Scottish".  :o  There was not a section to fill in about your Football team, but we will always be loyal to Liverpool which also has a long Scottish tradition ;)  We will always both love our roots in England & Ireland but we now have our home and life in Scotland :)

O.K. back to topic.  I agree with Sannyrut it's now passed it's sell by date.[xx(]

Just to illustrate how unique that Celtic team was in being the first UK side to win the European Cup here is a quote from their captain, Billy McNeill:
"We were all very local boys. Bobby Lennox had come the farthest and that was only 30 miles away on Ayrshire coast. The rest of us lived virtually next door to the ground. Having come through the ranks at Celtic without any real success was the thing that stimulated that group of players. We were very determined, very positive in our attitude to the game. When Big Jock had come back to Celtic in 1965 he realised the potential and really got us playing to our full."

They also benefited from being at a club which didn't operate a sectarian policy. Big Jock and all subsequent managers were able to pick players purely on their ability to play football.
I am delighted that the European Football Authority are watching the behaviour of all those who claim to be fans and are quite prepared to punish them for any unacceptable chants. Clearly this stance had its desired effect. Long may it continue to register as having no place in our multi-cultural society. Having said that I hope the game retains the passion and humour which makes football the vibrant spectacle enjoyed by so many.
I recall standing behind a couple of stalwarts as they discussed the merits of a novice centre-half who was struggling to cope with the penetrating runs of his opponent on that day.
"Ah-gie him a chance. He really is good in the air"
To be met with his pal's response,
"Aye so was Douglas Bader ----and he'd nae f-*-*n' legs"
