Well its a matter of physics that there will be less space.
Things have changed since you last flew long haul with Wright Bros.:D

Once I had seats empty in front and behind and tried the reclining function, I cant say they make much difference to the comfort of the seat, you still have the seat in front pressing on your knee, BUT, when you are sitting behind someone who has reclined it really makes a difference to your space especially when your coffee suddenly spills over you with no turbalence in sight,
Charters and economy airlines should have fixed seats then no probs

I dont want to sit behind a recliner for any length of time, but the longer the flight, the worst it would be.
Dont recline, its not big, and its not clever

Not sure you have ever flown long haul but if you have you will have probably noticed that 99% of people recline at some point so they can get some sleep. That's why they fit reclining seats!

I go back to Cathay Pacific - if you want long haul without the seat in front of you reclining into your space then fly with them. It's not as comfy but it's not bad either.

Try sitting upright in a seat for 10 plus hours. I dont know what the seat space is for these charter and no frill airlines are like but heard it is not good. When you fly long haul with a normal airline then you do get a lot more space and when people recline in front of me it doesnt disturb me and I am over 6 foot tall.
There is a big difference in the seating configurations between short and long haul so your comments above are irrelevant.

I have read it again and again Des and it still says to me 'I have a right to do what I like regardless of the situation behind me (baby on lap) and if you don't like it tough and if you object you will end up in a punch up!' thus I replied to it likewise![?]

Just remembered a recent experience. I flew Spanair from Barcelona to Palma last April. Although it was a 25 min hop, I could barely get the width of my hand between the 2 seats. My next flight was THY from Barcelona to Istanbul and there was over 4 hand widths (sorry dont carry tape measure on me) from my seat to the seat in front and reclining didnt bother me one bit.
So it all depends on the flight, airline and plane they use.
When doing online check in, I always use http://www.seatguru.com/ when choosing where to sit and see where the bad and good seats are. Although I dont think this would be much good for charter flights.
