A bit late but we are travelling down to Newcastle later (via Edinburgh/A1) and time is not pressing so I was wondering if there are any suggestions for "must see" places not too far off the route. It's not an area I know well at all and I understand it is "God's own country" so there must be some wonderful sights.

All not too far from your route Scunner - Alnwick castle,Alnwick Gardens,Hadrians wall,Bamburgh Castle,Seahouses,Holy Island,Cragside,Cambois Village,Wallington Hall,Hexham,Corbridge.All very beautiful ,historic houses ,gardens and villages.A bus top sight seeing tour of Newcastle also takes in the history and architecture of the city not just the shops and bars normally associated with the Toon.
Then of course theres the Angel of the North,The Sage Music centre,centre for life,millenium bridge,Newcastle Quayside and Gods own St James park rises majestically over the city !

Steve has got it all. Visit them all Keith and you will not be disappointed. He did make one mistake though, don't bother with St James park, its full of losers, go to the Stadium of Light instead and see Sunderland in action, far more entertaining!.....lol

No need to visit Sunderland Eric, I stayed there one night a week for about three years and know it fairly well. Fit (but drunk) young girls flashing their boobs at the police, that's what I associate with Sunderland mostly. Used to stay at the Roker Hotel, great cooked breakfast while looking out at the miserable grey sky, grey sea and rain

Coming down later today Steve, heading for the airport though.

Alnwick Castle is lovely, the kids will like it because Harry Potter was filmed there.
