When we arrived in May, I chose the passport control queue with just one couple ahead - then was dismayed as I approached to hear "...no...under YOUR rules...not mine...it is 90, ok 90...in ANY 180..." - pointing at passports and arrival of other airport men. Bad decision by me, but based on my experience alone I would say that 100% of people I have been behind have had problems with the new system

Oh well now I am confussed  ???and I thought I were sorted

go straight to passport control. you cannot get a new visa until 181 days after the date of the current one. your september trip cant go beyond the 180 days.

what would happen if you bought a new visa and then went to passport control having already bought a visa earlier in the year and was still withn 180 day period?

The thing that rankles me is if you get your visa,stay for 50 days then leave for 91 days why cant you pay for a new visa when you re-enter within the 180 day period?? If the Turkish authorities are trying to clamp down on the foreigners staying on tourist visas fair enough, but if you are out of the counrty for 91 days then obviously you cant be in for more than 90. simples.

so this sounds like people like us who go out 2 or 3 times a year over a 6 month period have to be very careful.

We would never be anywhere near the 90 days in country limit, but our first and last visits are usualy around 6 months apart - April and October. It sounds like we need to make sure our last trip us either fully within the 180 days (same visa) or fully beyond (new visa) - we will be in trouble if our dates "straddle" the 180 day limit.

My understanding was that it was changed from 90 day to 90 in 180 days to address the "island hopping" permanent stayers avoiding residency Paul.

No it was to bring Turkey into line with signatories to the Schengen Agreement which is most of Europe
