I would recommend that all persons should have a high lumens flashlight that can be used to temporarily blind an attacker. They are totally legal and their robust construction means they also make a useful weapon for defense. This is my one.

What sort of size are these Lucinda ?

Sunlover they are quite compact and either on strobe or full beam will disorientate a person or simply shining it in the direction of a suspicious person will make them think twice. You can find it here

Try to take a photo of them when they first approach, with camera or the one on your phone. That should convince them not to start being a pest...

Lot's of good ideas here but in our case, a couple of motorbikes (not scooters) racing up behind us didn't give us any chance to protect ourselves.

Changed days indeed for Calis.  It certainly isn't the place it was 10 years ago. I too have heard about all the fighting in Calis and whilst disputes between certain bars has been ongoing for years, the fact that they are openly fighting in the street, just shows that the fueding is no longer kept under wraps. Fighting, thieving, burglaries, muggings and and egging are not good for tourism BUT there are a lot of expats living in and around Calis all year round so this is worrying for everyone.  High profile policing does help IF these rogues are suitably punished, which we know, they aren't !

hiya ive only joined the forum tonight
we go to calis in 3 weeks and my mum has an apartment there
if i remember right (its been 3 years) is quite dark to get to my mums apartment so i will definitely be getting a taxi on a night now
not sure if its been built up around there since last time i visited

must admit im petrified now after reading this and i remember calis being such a lovely place

Laura you should enjoy your holiday just as you did 3 years ago. These incidents, although disappointing, are relatively rare. I have known Calis for years and do know that some not very nice incidents happen - but I do not recognise the picture of Calis that ray1951 paints. It is just sensationalist rubbish. My view, I'm entitled to it  

Calis is still the lovely place you remember - just relax and enjoy. Isolated bad incidents do seem to happen, but rarely. Come back and tell us how you found things in Calis
