When my children were small, they adored going out in the evenings when we were on holiday. There didn't have to be any special laid on entertainment, they simply loved the holiday atmosphere and the difference from everyday life. They'd wander round (close by) looking in souvenir shops and planning how to spend their holiday money. Waiters fussed over them, they made new friends. They liked getting dressed up to go out for dinner and feeling a bit grown up. Invariably later they'd start dropping off and that was the signal to take them home - tired but happy. They still talk about how they loved it.
