Just two years Des? I've been saying it for 10.

But the carnival and the litter are separate issues.
I agree Keith.

Partly to try and get this back to original topic - and partly because it is a good discussion point in itself - here is a new topic asking what you think Calis needs most, if it is to compete in the huge and varied summer holiday market:

Now that we are back on topic after some very interesting diversions; just to clarify Nicola, the 30,000 TL needed to put on the carnival and the associated events would not all have gone to the charity if there had been no carnival and carnival week.  Most of this money was actually given by various businesses (after much grovelling and pleading on the part of our committee!) in return for advertising space and publicity on posters, flyers, road banners, Calis maps, carnival parade cups etc etc. etc....  The money we raised from selling this advertising space was used to pay not only for this printing but for hire of stages, generators, sound systems, street entertainers, clowns, bunting, flags, balloon decorations and so on and although most of the artists at the concerts performed for free, (there were a few exceptions) there were associated expenses that we had to meet. Fortunately some kind supporters did provide us with sponsorship in kind or the week would have cost even more to put on.   We saw the Carnival not only as a great family fun event  and a boost to tourism in Calis but also as an income generator for the children, as it enabled us to stage specific fundraing events such as the Promises Auction and the Craft Fair during the week and  also to collect money on parade day. Also any money  left over from sponsorship, after expenses were met, went to the children. This is all detailed in the Calis Carnival Committee annual published reports and financial statements.

Now that we are no longer responsible for organising the carnival, our new charity committee, the 3C's, which evolved from the former Calis Carnival Fundraising Committee,  is able to concentrate all it's energies on raising money for the children and as most of you know, we raised a record 75,000TL last year  (220,000 TL in total - around 80,000 pounds)  which all went to fund projects for local children and we are  really happy and proud of this.  However,  personally Pete and I still miss the carnival (can't speak for the rest of the committee   ;) ), but unfortunately at the moment we do not have the energy or time to commit to both.

I can understand how gutted you both must be to see your brain-child go like this and your comitment was never doubted, neither was that of the rest of the committee and we all appreciated the entertainment value of a special week. Luckily, we still have the promises auction to look forward to and that is usually a fun day and what an auctioneer you found last year. As one gets older the energy starts to lessen and to the rank and file, the episode was a fun week but to you, it was a slog of a year and for what we got out of that week,I am sure that I speak for the majority of the Calis regulars when I say: 'THANK YOU' to you and your committee.

What the 'Sponsors' will want is really pretty simple.lf they cough up some Lira, they'll want the event in their own backyard(or Restaurant or Hotel), so they get an ample return on their so-called investment. Cynical, yes, but I fear true. Sprat to catch a Mackerel syndrome & sod everybody else.

Yes it did, but with charity you need unpaid volunteers, and it became to big to expect that to continue year in, year out..

I would echo what you said earlier - Pete and Chrissie deserve a huge thank you for the vision and application - along with the committee who work so hard to give everyone a cracking 7 days and help make so many lives a little nicer locally. I'm sorry they couldn't keep it going but at least they can have (most of) their lives back  :)

Pete and Chrissie - along with the committee will always have the satisfaction of being able to say "We did make a difference" and that is a splendid thing indeed ;D

As a member of the ex. Carnival committee and after discussions with some of my fellow members we miss it too...It was extremely hard work but oh such fun and something to be proud of...maybe when the bars see what they have missed they may change their tune next year who knows.....
