Shops or Market?
« on: April 13, 2013, 19:14:07 PM »
When out in Turkey i like to buy a range of genuine fake designer clothes. I don't know where i am better getting it though? Am i better to buy it at the market as i can haggle the price down or am i better buying it from the shops in Calis? Furthermore, is it okay to haggle in the shops like you do in the market?

Thanks. Ross.

I seriously came to the conclusion that it is not worth buying at either. When we lived there we used to stock up with clothes on our UK visits.

I think one or two have commented previously that they don't find the markets much cheaper than the shops these days.  My son prefers the shops in Fethiye as he thinks the clothes are better quality when he's looking for  genuine fakes and around the same price.  Yes, you can still barter/haggle in the shops.  Just occasionally we have found some good quality fakes - mostly shirts, but as Scunner says - there is a lot of old tat so you have to choose carefully.

They all get their stuff from the same suppliers.  You can haggle anywhere but believe me, they will get the price they're looking for.  Inspect the stuff and if you're happy to pay for it, go for it. I went to Marmaris for a few days last May and I liked the fact that whilst the stuff was the same everywhere, at least they had prices on their stuff in the shops but you could still barter if you were up for it.  Good luck and Happy Shopping.

Markets are no longer cheap. Shops in Fethiye and also Hisaronu are the best.  Apart from the fake stuff look at shops like Mavi in Fethiye that sell really nice men's and women's clothing all made in Turkey. Also they will make alterations for you for free within a couple of hours.
If you go to Hisaronu in the afternoon when everyone is at the beach and the shops are quiet, you will always get really good reductions on the fake stuff and remember to haggle.

If you buy in the shops you get what you see, not something they whip out from under the counter already wrapped. I got 'done' once with a market handbag, lovely leather one on show but a plastic one in the wrapping! Lesson learned! Hisaronu shop keepers are more likely to drop prices at the end if the season because they close down, unlike Fethiye, and need to make as much as possible for the long winter. This always makes me feel sad for them somehow?

Just bear in mind though that Trading Standards are increasing their presence at airports in the UK and, together with HMRC, are on the lookout for fake goods being imported in large quantities.

I remember one flight from Dalaman into Gatwick where everyone was stopped and most were searched - there was a line of customs guys standing between the carousel and the nothing to declare exit and if you said Dalaman when they asked you what flight you just arrived on, you were taken aside - it was choas.

Having found nothing of interest in my case (I used to travel to the UK as light as possible so I could return cheese and pork laden) the cheeky sod asked me what the purpose of my visit to the UK was! I said for an exhibition and would you believe he then asked "How long do you intend staying in the United Kingdom?" to which my answer was to be "I'm born and bred British, I can stay here as long as I like you jumped up little prick", but for some reason it came out as "Only till Tuesday"!!!

There were some amazing scenes in that customs area though - emptied suitcases with an exact suitcase size pile of cigarette cartons next to them, suitcases being emptied that were entirely full of polo shirts, T shirts, and another thing they love to find - cash.

If there is/was a list of flight origins to target for counterfeit goods, I can assure you Dalaman is on it.
