After over 25 years of auditions and listening to my Father's singers there where many who had a great range of music, most where excellent.. This was in the era of working men's clubs and anyone who was not good was not booked. My Father used to arrange for the audience to ask for requests so the singers had to be ready for anything.   It's amazing how many famous people started out in these clubs.. My Father had quite a few on his books and kept the wages receipts after he retired so he could show his friends.

There's a difference between performing the odd request and providing an evening's entertainment in one genre.  I'm married to a pro musician who spent his early career backing acts in WMC (no better place to learn the business some say) and yes indeed some were excellent and went on to bigger and better things.  Some were bloody awful and got paid off after one or two numbers - there was no consideration for anyone's feelings in the old days - the Concert Secretary would just switch the mic off!  ;D

My Father turned no one off because he audition everyone first... He was very fussy about that as having a few hundred people in on a Saturday night a rotten singer would not have been tolerated.

The Singer at the Kings Garden is Shelley, however I did see some pictures recently of a guy in a cowboy hat up singer, but he could have been a customer..

A lot of Yorkshire clubs used agents to book their acts Jacqui.  In fairness, some decent acts were boo-ed off too just because the crowd didn't like their style or weren't familiar with their material.
Ken Dodd would have been switched off in Yorkshire if he over-ran into the Bingo - I kid you not!

Scorcher, are you part of the Muso clan??
