There were plans Stoop but the bird sanctuary is protected which creates problems. There was talk of building a type of flyover to preserve it but I think that was a bit far fetched.Guess we will just have to wait and see.

When we bought our place which is the other side of the reeds on Erdemler, we were told (?) that the 'bird sanctuary' was protected by UNESCO, don't know how true it is!

I think I remember a time when you could watch the sunset from the ground floor in that part of town Maria - the reeds weren't always that tall. Is that right or did I dream that one :D

I don't think personally that the sanctuary part will be touched (apart from maybe some works to stop the erosion of the banks by the boats) all that has been cleared so far is down to the new bridge, none of which is part of the sanctuary. The reeds in the area being worked on were cleared annually, as are the other water channels in the Calis/Fethiye area, mainly to keep the mozzie population down.

Yes the reeds used to be trimmed regularly and although we didn't catch the full sunset you could see a bit of it. We could also see the top of the boats as they passed down the river and we definitely claimed a sea view towards fethiye! However they haven't been trimmed in a while .

According to this map both sides of the canal as you approach the sea are included within the designated bird sanctuary area:

Personally I would like to see it dredged or widened if necessary but left so that the reeds would re-colonise

Which confirms what I said, the sanctuary boundary starts by Club E and heads towards the sea end of the canal.

Spent the day with Sule Beder today and asked her if she knew anything about the changes as we drove past.

She said that indeed the Kus Cennetti is a protected area and will not be touched but the area before the sanctuary (going towards Fethiye) will be park and also has been cleared for the construction of Government buildings.

Will the water taxis still run during this work?  I'm out in early June and am looking forward to travelling "in style" to Fethiye.   It's a very pleasant part of the holiday...much better in my opinion than using the dolmus, although they are cheap and handy.

My understanding is that the work will be finished before the start of the season and the boats will be running
