A friend of ours was coming back from Marmaris to Glasgow.   There was an  announcement over the public address system, when the plane arrived that the Customs would be searching everyone for over the limit amounts of cigarettes and if anyone wanted to avoid a search they should leave excess cigarettes in the bins provided at Customs or face the consequences.  My friend said the bins were full.

Jacqui may I ask after the announcement, did the customs actually search all, if anyone on that flight?  When we arrive back late at night at Luton or Stansted there is never even a cleaner about, let alone a customs officer, and half the people on the Turkish flight go through the EU exit anyway with no problem.

Ok, I've read all the comments this morning. Been back a weekish and thought I'd log on and have a read. On our return journey, we thought we'd buy a couple of bottles to take home even though there's not that much difference. The person on the check out at duty free in Dalaman tried to tell me that we could take 2 litres of spirits each. I told her that we're going to the UK and our limit is 1 litre. She argued that it was ok and we should buy more. Quite obviously we didn't but just posting here to let people know that our limit is only 1 LITRE each bringing back to the UK.

They will tell you anything at Dalaman just to get the sale.  After all, once you've paid, they have your money and when you arrive back in the UK you are under the control of UK customs and their regulations are known to us all, so taking more than the permitted allowance is a chance people take.  At Glasgow airport there are telephones so that if you have more than the allowance, you can ring them to let them know.  Early morning and late evening customs officers/personnel are seldom around.  I wonder how many people lift that phone.  Ha ha ha.

From what our friend told us, the Customs did not need to search everyone as it seemed they got a good haul without the search.  Our friend who is an Irishman living in Scotland was really miffed as he had brought over quite a few packets of cigarettes himself, but his wife made him put the excess in the bins.

A few years ago on a return flight, Dalaman to Edinburgh, it was announced twice during the flight that Customs were going to search all passengers on arrival. After collecting our cases we joined a long queue at the Custom's check area. Large clear bags in metal frames were laid out and a uniformed Customs officer walked up and down the queues advising that anyone with excess duty free goods should declare them and pay the duty or surrender them and deposit them in the bags or face the consequences. As far as I know everyone was searched. With some passengers it was simply their cases but with others cases and a body search.
In most other return flights to the UK I have rarely seen a Customs officer.

We arrived at Dalaman last night they would only allow us to buy 1 litre of spirits on each passport, they said we could have a further bottle of malibu or Martini etc.

My friend who is a Frenchman living in England says he'd have been miffed as well  ;)
