Agree with Fifi regarding hassle in the Canaries, before we started coming to Calis around 10 years ago we stayed in Porto Rico and on our first day we were hassled by time -share sharks, who seemed to pop up all over the place. We don't get much hassle in Calis   8)

I spoke to Murat at Ace Travel in Calis and he said that there are camera's filming to see who is 'crossing' the line etc. so everyone is being monitored.  As other have said, waiters and owners that we have known for years are not able to greet their friends as they have in the past, which is a great shame.  I had previously remarked that I felt that there was a 'different' feeling about Calis this year and maybe this is part of it.  Calis is not the place it was 15 years ago and whilst I agree that we have to 'move with the times' sometimes so called improvements take the heart out of a place and people.

We go out a lot in Hisaronu and I don't feel it is that bad. I find a 'No thanks' is enough and just carry on strolling.

Makes me wonder if there might be a more sinister reason for this? I wonder if the police have been told to clamp down on premises that sell alcohol? I know it's happened in some parts of Istanbul.

We all know the main man wants to move everything eastwards. Maybe this is just the start of things to come?

We only walked the prom once this year and were not hassled at all. In fact Rushie missed us for the first time ever!

I'm sure that we, like many others, are recognised and have chatted with (some more briefly than others) probably a quarter of the restaurant guys on the beach. When we first arrive, they approach and say hello, inquiring when we arrived, how long we're staying etc.   All pleasant enough and most times quite welcoming.  Always asking if we will visit the restaurant.   Standard answer...' we will try'.    The next time they see us, its usually a wave/ a hello/ an indication with their hands towards a table/. One or all of these...... But I would not say that at anytime we felt hassled......
Of course, you then have the ones who don't know us and approach as soon as you even look in their direction..  When told  'We have already eaten ' its normally a 'Thank you. Try us next time'. Then its usually a card and a promise that if you go there you will get the best meal in Calis.. Always very courteous.  Okay! Sometimes this attention is wanted and sometimes you could do without it .... So if I'm being honest here, its how I feel that day, not what they do.
Where the justification is, to deny someone of their livelihood for any period of time, is beyond my comprehension.    Especially as some of these guys have waited for months for this business.  We've been to other parts of Turkey and there, have been 'hassled'.  Especially Gumbet.  Now there's a place.  You literally need to shake  them off your sleeve cause they're tugging at you to go into whatever they have....... Absolute nightmare.
Now here's a funny thing.  When we recommend Calis to friends, family or whoever,  we always stress amongst other things that you DO'NT get hassle from the traders.   Anyone who goes there agrees with us............... How could we be so wrong, eh?

One of the reasons we love Calis is it's so laid back & never been pestered by the restaurant / bar staff to go into their establishments. Saw at least 5 restaurants closed last night along the promenade.
Can't quite grasp why the council are doing, surely by closing these restaurants & bars it's affecting tourism, local workers losing pay & government losing much needed revenue from taxes.
If they are guilty of pestering, which I find hard to believe, surely a warning system & a fine would be appropriate and less harmful to tourism & the economy.

I wonder if all this is being acted upon as a result of complaints from passers by, in which case it would be interesting know which nationalities are complaining or is it fear of complaints?

Not going to be an enjoyable night time stroll along the front now.  Will be anxious not to nod, say hello or speak to any of the waiters or bar owners, who we have chatted to over the last 9 years.   This is a bloody country of extreme's, for sure.

We have known many of the waiters in Calis for over 7 years... Does this mean that we can't walk past and greet them now? Many are friends and they always give us a hug and and a kiss on both cheeks... We don't always eat in their places but never the less we always stop to chat to them.. Madness....
Yes, madness it is. We arrived on tuesday and had some chats on the prom tuesdayevening just to find out some of those we chatted with got shut down for 3 days. That really makes you feel comfortable  :-[

It's ridiculous and some say it has to do with the local elections and someone puts his foot down.

VOJOS
Can I ask why you think you were closed.?
Some have suggested jealousy by other businesses.
Some say the tourist's are upset.
Some say the Zabita are overdoing it.
What do you think it is.?
Thanks
Kev                 :)

I really don't know why we are closed. Over 2 weeks ago we noticed 3 plain clothed police officer with a camera in their hands recording secretly. A few days later we had a formal letter saying we got caught hassling people( talking to your own wife, family member or old customers outside the red line all classified as hassling too) so on Wednesday zabita came and told us that we were to close for 3 days. We received no warning or don't do again or we will close you approach . It's not belediyes decision as the ruling came from kaymakam( head of local goverment) calis der president mete ay and his committee went to meet mr kaymakam to over turn his decision with no success so we were closed down yesterday morning and will stay closed till Sunday 10 am. What weees me off is hassling isn't the main problem in calis and there are millions of other things they should do to improve tourism in calis. Closing restaurant for no reason isn't one of them
