PM Erdogan
« on: August 11, 2014, 17:12:44 PM »
Now that Erdogan has been elected PM, I wonder what the future holds for Turkey, based on his recent changes to the law re. the selling of alcohol etc. and what the rate of exchange will be.  He has said that the rate needs to be reduced to approx 2.39, good news for some but not for others.  Obviously no one knows for sure, I just wondered what other peoples' thoughts are.

The rate he hankers after, but is unlikely to get, is 2.39TL to the euro not the pound.  Well that is unless there is complete collapse of the Euro, nothing to do with the over-inflated opinion of Reg of how much the TL should be worth, particularly when you have an inflation rate of over 9% and the worse current account deficit of any of the developing nations, which is likely to be made worse in the next few months as the cheap money that has bolstered Turkish spending (and debt) is turned off at the source by the yanks turning off the QE.  Still you know Reg he'll find someone else to blame!!

I think Jacqui was simply correcting that he has been elected President not PM (Prime Minister) an office he has held since 2002.

Erdogan once said that democracy is like riding a train - once you get to your station you get off. Is becoming President his "station". That's a pretty chilling thought. What is the future going to be like? I think there is little doubt that RTE will try to continue is Islamification project. How far you think he will get with depends, I suggest, on your answer to two related questions. 1) Has his current popularity been built on widespread conservative Islamic inclinations in the majority of the Turkish population or have a large number of his supporters allowed him to indulge his religious whims because he has delivered the "economic miracle" of growth, currency stability and personal prosperity? 2) If your answer to the first question is the same as Clinton's "It's the economy, stupid", then do the think the wheels are going to fall that in 2015. And will it happen before the General Election in June 2015. My guess is that the Turkish economy is going to have a very bumpy ride next year. But not in time for it to impact on the election. So AKP will retain its power thus allowing RTE to continue his Islamification programme. If so, be ready for the spread of non-alcohol zones, gender segregated beaches in more resorts, new Islamic resorts for Middle East tourists with 5* hotels built by RTE's family and friends, and all the rest that comes with this.

P.S. I concentrated on the tourist implications not because it is of particularly great importance to the Turkish economy (only about 7% I think) but because I thought it of most interest to this forum.

If further shifts towards more Islamic ways is his desire, wouldn't he have been more effective in achieving it by staying as PM?

By AKP rules he cannot be PM after the 2015 election (3 strikes and you're out). He has "done a Putin" by jumping to the President job and will try to transfer all PM powers to Pres. He said so in his victory speech and it has been posted by Nichola.
