Ah but in Turkey it is a Kanal  - not even a canal - because it has been kanalised by the DSI and that makes it official!

dutchie. have stayed beside the kanal for the past 7 years. in all this time the kanal has ever had any sort of smell even after all the work. total nonsense imo

Our place is by the no longer upside down bridge, I sit on our balcony probably 30 foot or so from the river (because it flows) and have never noticed any smell apart from the cows next door     

That is no way in which to refer to your neighbours !! ;-)
