I do strongly believe that it is up to the people to address or change their political situation.
I can certainly see the strength in this approach. In the end of course it will be the people of Turkey who determine their future - even if it is at the point of a rifle muzzle or water tank. However, I think other forces can also influence this. I boycotted Apartheid South Africa goods from the mid 1960s to 1990 when I saw on TV Nelson Mandela walking free away from his 27 year imprisonment. I certainly wouldn't have gone on holiday there. I believe the sustained boycott, maybe the sporting isolation in particular, played their part in his release to begin building a new South Africa.

Hilary and I are members of Amnesty International which emailed us reports of beatings, torture and rape in Turkey's prisons and informal "holding stations" (such as the Ankara Police sports hall and riding stables). We signed a petition calling upon Erdogan to put an end to such practices. We didn't feel we could do that and then say "But it's OK for us to go on holiday there".

But it is about how you feel it about it. If others feel it is OK to holiday that is fine and I certainly wouldn't want to argue with them. It is just not for us in 2017. We will see where things go after that.

I think those who have invested in Turkey to the extent of purchasing property would be reluctant to follow your lead Colwyn, for a variety of reasons.

I believe a lot of it is the "bubble" effect I (and some others) have mentioned previously - unless you take an active interest in whats happening outside the Fethiye area, on the surface life just goes on pretty much as it used to.  Your £'s buy you more ₺'s than before, the sun is still shining and (so far) no-one has been gassed, beaten up or water cannoned in Çarşı Caddesi.

Step outside that "bubble" and the Turkey of today is very different to that experienced by holidaymakers in Fethiye.  Arrests, detentions, torture and intimidation by not just the authorities, but groups of citizens acting (they believe) as defenders of democracy.  Move to the south east of the country and there are bombings, killings and other dreadful acts being carried out by both sides of the conflict.  Its become so common place down there that it hardly rates a column inch in the media, both domestic and international.

Every strata of society has been affected by the events post 15th July.  Comments made at the Yenikapi rally last night suggests that the death penalty is going to be back on the books soon... and it doesn't take an Einstein to work out who will be the recipient of this extreme measure.

Turkey is a divided country.  Divided by politics, divided by race and most importantly, divided by the personal ambitions of those currently in power.

I suspect that until any of the above atrocities actually begin to directly affect those inside the "bubble", most will carry on as normal - and there's nothing wrong with that.  Many folks have invested considerable sums in property, and to a lesser extent, in businesses locally.  They don't have the luxury of being able to pick and choose holiday destinations, they've made a conscious choice to put all their bricks (and mortar) in the one basket.  I know they could simply sell up and toddle off to pastures new (or old), but as we all know, it's just not that easy.

My OH and I (and our girls) have been discussing our situation vis-à-vis Turkey for some time now.  We didn't have any plans to holiday in Turkey this year and we've simply left it at that.  I'm comfortable (from a moral perspective) with the folks I'm working with in Istanbul, and have no issues with going to the office as and when I need to - and that's all I want to say about that.

We have invested in our place in Calis and continue to invest.  We love the house.  love the neighbour's and the local Turkish people, who have done nothing wrong apart from making a living from Tourism. We only have one problem visiting again this year....Finding flipping flights.

So goodbye Colwyn.  I hope you find the perfect holiday destination that has Politics and Policies that you like and will feel comfortable with.

Thanks Stoop. Actually my next holiday, in September and booked in 2015, will also be in .... Portugal (Lisbon area). Portugal seems to have become a rather good country, post-Salazar. I hope Turkey will become the same (agin) post-Erdogan. Whether I will get to see this is or not ... ???

Not at all.
Seems  it's OK to dish it out but be the first to complain when on the receiving end.

I said goodbye to Colwyn (he is not coming back to Turkey due to his beliefs).  I see nothing wrong with that.
I always say what I think is true. Some people go onto Facebook and speak behind people's backs, which I find quite hypocritical.   Not speaking about you Colywn you are very frank and I admire the fact you always speak your mind even if I do not agree with you.
So, I will say goodbye and good luck wherever you choose to holiday in the future.
