Carrying a Passport.
« on: April 06, 2017, 10:50:08 AM »
There is advice being given on many website and F.B. Pages and T.A. about carrying a Passport as I.D. At all times.  People have been stopped by the Police and fined.

I have read it is the Law to carry a Passport  it is also on the U.K. Government Website.
However, I note  on a number  F.B. Page (mainly for Hisaronu) the  same Tour Operator is telling everyone that  they don't need to carry their passports, they only need a copy of their passports and not to bring passports on Jeep Safari's

Although it is said it is the law in Turkey to carry passports, is it in writing anywhere?

Yes, Kevin, for 12 years, however, things seemed to have been tightened up now, the law is, copies are not accepted. Perhaps the law may be have been bent, in the past. but I have also read of people being fined 400TL for not carrying a passport.  One guy on T.A was taken to the Police Station.
We also only ever carried copies of our passports in the past.  However, will carry passports from now on.

It's always been the law that citizens and visitors to Turkey must carry some form of photo ID. In the past it hasn't been enforced particularly strongly for tourists in resorts. However, since the implementation of the State of Emergency, it wouldn't be wise to be stopped by a Polis or Jandarma officer without at least a photocopy of your passport on you. If you were to be arrested and / or fined you'd get little help from the FCO because you've chosen to ignore their well-publicised advice.

I was informed last year to  carry my passport/driving licence whilst in Turkey, A couple of days of days later I was pulled into a police checkpoint at the top of the hill going into Hisaronu, guess what they wanted my passport as ID.
I did have a photocopy which was acceptable to them

I won't be carrying my passport around with me.

We have made credit card sized copies and will carry these with us just as we did last year.

We carry ours at all times now.  Several people been fined, some have got away with just a residency card ID.
Under a state of emergency we're told its law so we're doing it.

Always carry ours now as we were advised at start of state of emergency. Have heard reports of fines being given for not having passport when stopped at check point at top of Ovacik hill.

Contrary to before, I now always carry my passport in Istanbul.  Seen folks being detained for not having sufficient ID - no idea if they are fined, but not a pleasant experience methinks.
