I always find it odd that people are so scared of carrying a passport, yet they feel responsible enough to carry a wallet or a purse, credit cards, phones, cameras, money, with no problem, but as soon as a passport is mentioned they don't feel responsible and are terrified of losing it.

I agree Jacqui.
I carry mine all the time whilst we are in Turkey...but each to there own, I guess.

I actually prefer to keep it about my person as apposed to leaving it in the property.

My guess is that things are a lot more complicated if losing a passport - bank cards can be cancelled easily, money (though a pain to lose) can be replaced but, losing a passport means consulates, ID checks, emergency documents, delays to travel, etc.

That said, thanks to all who have highlighted this - we're coming back over next week and it has prompted me to get paper copies and scans on our phones of both our passports and visas, which we wouldn't have done otherwise!

As others have said, it's law due to the state of emergency and if you take the risk you may be lucky or you may not.

One English friend was fined for not having her passport with her, even though she had a photocopy AND her residence permit in her bag, and then accompanied home by the jandarma so they could see the original.

Bank Cards can be cancelled?   Posts in the last few years have shown they are not cancelled quick enough due to problems getting through to Banks and money has been take from cards stolen in the local area. Then the people concerned have to go through a whole pile of hassle to get their money back.   Paper money lost cannot be replaced.  An emergency passport can be obtained from the British Consulate in Fethiye, also if you have a paper copy to show, you would have less of a problem I imagine.

We have been on cruises in the last couple of years and have been told we must carry our passport when leaving the ship in certain countries, copies are not acceptable.  We took our passports and credit cards and phones and my ipad and we managed not to loose any of them,  even in Russia for two days and we were on the Metro in St.Peterburg.  After this, I think we will manage to carry our passports in Calis and Fethiye... We are fearless.    ;) ;D :P

I stand corrected, Jacqui! Just shows the gulf that can exist between a perception and reality!!

It's actually just the law.  The state of emergency has meant that ID checks are being carried out on a more regular basis and the degree of latitude (in respect of what's acceptable ID) that existed in tourist areas pre-coup attempt is no longer there.

My OH had a similar situation few years ago in Istanbul - she was taken back to the house to show them her passport and RP.  No fine but still a fairly unpleasant experience.

If you can carry a photocopy and not loose it, just carry your passport,  I cannot see what the problem is.??

Wallet's not big enough to hold a passport.

Pockets in shirt or trousers squidge up a passport = bent/tatty after a very short while.

Photocopy (notarised) folded in wallet - no problem.

Plus, it's not a simple five minute job to replace a lost/stolen original passport.

I like the photocopy idea.

Passport in safe.
