Mine was Hawkwind at Kingston Polytechnic in 1971 - aged 17
On entry a guy approached me and asked if I wanted any coke
to which i said no thanks, I'm going for a beer (thought he was offering
me a soft drink - BLESS !!!!!)
-
They were my first too at Medway & Maidstone Art College also in 1971. I think Black Sabbath and/or Led Zeppelin were on the same bill. To be quite honest I wasn't interested in any of the bands but my girlfriend at the time was the Entertainment Secretary for the college so I was getting free tickets.
-
Stiff Little Fingers at Friars in Aylesbury :)
-
Black Sabbath if my memory serves me correctly at Deeside Leisure Centre Ice Rink. circa 1979
-
OMG memories. Mine was Elton John in 1970. He was unknown and the venue was a field in Krumlin, Barkisland, about 2 miles from home. I thought I'd forgotten this. It feels surreal now. Thanks for dredging up the memory....that's fab!! :)
-
Dave Clark Five at the Two Red Shoes in Elgin circa 1963
-
The Searchers for me, playing on the windy sea front in the North East circa 1964 ish! ( I was very young!)
-
The Angelic Upstarts at Bolinbroke Hall,South Shields what an epiphany !
-
T Rex in 1972 Cardiff Capitol theatre (long gone now !), I didn't really like them but a friend of mine gave me a ticket for nothing so I went, I was really glad I did, in all fairness Marc Bolan was outstanding on stage.

-
The Bee Gees 1978 in Vancouver, i was on a football tour at the time and the father of the lad i was staying with was the arena manager so it was free entry. It was an amazing concert made even more bearable by the fact that 98% of the audience was female ;D
-
OMG! I'm really starting to feel my age now reading this. But have to own up to my first band seen live was The Beatles, in 1963, at Huddersfield's ABC Cinema. I was 11 at the time :o.
My 16 year old sister and her friend queued overnight for tickets but refused to take me so a neighbour's daughter took me instead.
It will be 50 years ago in November and I can still remember it! ;D
-
Also in 1971 - I saw Mungo Jerry at Wimbledon Town Hall supported by Supertamp !!!
(I would guess that Supertramp have made more money out of the music business than Mungo Jerry :) :) :) )
-
I was only 9 when the Beatles came to Huddersfield Marina but I remember that people queued for 4 days and nights to see them. I was too young when the Rolling Stones came not long after... My first live group Status Quo in Blackpool... Seen them about 4 times and always fantastic..... We did however used to go to The Fiesta club sheffield where such as The Mindbenders. The Fortunes.. etc. used to perform long after their sell by date but they were always brilliant.
-
The Clash, Victoria Park, Hackney 1978.
Used to see The Jam practising whne they were a 4 piece circa 1976.
-
Mercury - saw the Stones too, 1966 I think it was. Saw loads of bands play at the ABC when they all did tours together.
Saw Status Quo a couple of years ago in Halifax! Still rocking!! ;D
-
Marina......they were on at Halifax Victoria Theatre weren't they? I was too late to get a ticket!! Who'd believe they'd still be "Rockin All Over The World" now? Well, why not.....we are!!! :)
-
rolling stones at epsom swimming baths......searchers... swinging blue jeans.. tom jones...kinks...ALL in their early days..at our local "market hall" redhill...all brilliant.. ;D ;D...im amazed i can still remember.lol..
-
Those were the days when all these BIG bands and stars were playing at local dance venues! We never knew we had it so good.
-
Odd one for me, Boomtown Rats at Glasgow Apollo in October 1979. I bloody loved it!
I got a bit of a bug for live music though, that was followed by The Police, Queen and Blondie all in December 1979 at the same venue.
The good thing in these days is that all the big groups played in places like the Apollo, before they were replaced by the aircraft hanger type echoey arenas, and stadiums.
I remember seeing the Rolling Stones at Wembley, I might as well have been watching a video on the telly
-
Jimmy Hendrix jamming at Tofts in Folkestone with Noel Redding .
WW
-
mine was in 1973 Emerson, lake and Palmer at the empire in Liverpool. the start was delayed for an hour, because the stage had collapsed because of the weight of the drum kit
-
Marina......they were on at Halifax Victoria Theatre weren't they? I was too late to get a ticket!! Who'd believe they'd still be "Rockin All Over The World" now? Well, why not.....we are!!! :)
They were indeed Mrs Bouquet! All seats removed downstairs for the 'headbangers' although just about everyone in the balconies were dancing about anyway! Great night
-
Status Quo at the Apollo in Glasgow.
Newest band I saw was Slik at Salutation hotel in Perth. They stood out as something special and the lead singer, Mudge Ure, went on to front Ultravox.

Sounds like you saw all the tours that came round to these parts too. As well as the Beatles and Stones I can remember seeing the Kinks, Swinging Blue Jeans, Searchers, Hollies,. Cilla Black, Dave Berry, all in their early days, and those are just the ones I can remember!! All at the ABC cinema (now a Sainsbury's supermarket :()

I loved Slik, I heard their hit song on the radio recently, took me right back, but then I still know all the words to my beloved Osmonds and Bay City Rollers songs, those were the days (My friend)!!!
-
Excuse my wife's 'Osmonds and Bay City Rollers' history - she has since been educated in the likes of Ian Dury, Jethro Tull, AC/DC, The Who, Status Quo and other much more 'grown up' music ;)
BTW off to see The Dubliners in Swindon next Thursday :D
-
Eddie and the hot rods Cardiff Ritzy night club
-

The Rolling Stones, Odeon Theatre Newcastle, 1963, was 15 and just left school. they were my inspiration to move around the U-K, 2 years later I moved to London, the swinging 60.s, best years of my life. :) :)
-

The Jam and Motorhead together at a rock gig near Halifax in 1978
-
Buddy Holly Ipswich 1958.
-
Heather who are the band from Perth who had quite a famous hit? I always think Stealers Wheel, but it is obviously not them...
Was it ''the average white band'' some were from the Perth area.
-
No Jim, it's annoying me now. Sort of Stealers Wheel, but not them :)
-
Billy Fury at the Ipswich Gaumont about 1963. I am still in love with him. :D
-
Mine would have been about 1963, my cousin was the membership secretary for the Cavern, my Mum and Dad wanted to go shopping and so they palmed me off with my cousin to take me to the lunchtime session the club used to run on most days. The band on stage were called the Escorts.
-

-

I also saw Ian Dury's final concert there before he died :(
-
Salvation Army - 1955 in High Wycombe, Christmas carols.
-
The Jack Bruce Band featuring Mick Taylor----Glasgow Apollo June 1975.
Was going to put Ella Fitzgerald with Count Basie---Kelvin Hall 75 (but the reliable back-up memory of
Google tells me that was November)
Scunner---Could the band you are thinking of being from Perth be actually from Aberdeen.
I recall the Sutherland Brothers who toured with Quiver and produced a few hits with "Arms of
Mary"---"The Pie" ---"Dream Kid" and of course "Sailing" which became a hit for a Mr Stewart (not Andy)
Just checked Net and was informed that their first CBS single "Ain't too proud" 1975 had Dave Gilmour
on pedal steel guitar.

Not a group but Tom Jones at Bradford Alambra. It was thirty bob and I only got to go with my aunty because my uncle refused ppoint blank to go. He still had his pony tail then and he was amazing!! Marina I am so envious. The only thing I saw at The ABC was the films on a Saturday morning as part of The ABC minors.. I can still sing the tune.. They had a local group on occasionaly and I was smitten with the singer. I remember my aunty went to see the Hollies and she didnt wash her hand for a week because Alan Clarke kissed it.. Happy days.
-
No Jim, it's annoying me now. Sort of Stealers Wheel, but not them :)
The New Wave band Fiction Factory had some success with their hit "(Feels Like) Heaven" in 1984. is this the answer????
-
You're right Mercury, happy and quite innocent days compared to even just a few years later. I'm sure the reason my sister wouldn't take me to see the Beatles was because she was convinced John Lennon would spot her in the audience and fall instantly in love and marry her!! ;D
And anyone who was around at the time would remember the ABC Minors!! Can't recollect the tune though although I'm sure if I ask my OH he'll remember as he was a regular too. :)
-
Heather who are the band from Perth who had quite a famous hit? I always think Stealers Wheel, but it is obviously not them...
Keith, could it be the JSD band ,i know they are from Glasgow but they first came to the fore when playing in your neck of the woods.

Found this..che ck the trousers.

Thanks Heather & Ron - this is beginning to drive me mad. Definitely Perth, I only know because they were discussed on STV's Scotland's greatest songs or something. When they mentioned Perth I was surprised as I recognised the song and had no idea the band were from here. Unhelpfully I can't remember the band's name or indeed the song I had recognised!
I even found the lists of bands from the STV website and still can't see who it might have been. Mrs Scunner remembers them too (or like me remembers the mention that they were formed in Perth). If it was just me, I'd say it was Stealers wheel and the rest was my imagination. :)
-
The Rolling Stones Manchester Free Trade Hall 5th March 1971 "The Good Bye Britain Tour", 19/- a ticket as I remember.
-

Fiction Factory are the only ones mentioned in Wiki that had a hit and they got to number 6.

Animals at Leeds Queens Hotel, way back in 60's followed by all the great stars that came to Batley Variety Club. They were great days. In recent years Blondie, Status Quo, David Essex, Edwin Starr and may more at Harrogate Conference Centre. Happy memories...what a great thread!!!
-
david bowie at the old maine road stadium , think james was on with him , and dire straits same venue , different dates ,the latest was the osmonds (not donny ) at the o2 apollo manchester , and robby on the 18th june canny wait
-
First band was Billy J Kramer and the Dakotas at our youth club in 1963. Did go to IOW festival and saw Hendrix, Dylan ,The Who etc in 1969
-
Oh, Little Children, I love that song!
-
Probably not too politically correct to say it, as he is slowly being airbrushed from pop history, but it was Gary Glitter in Birmingham early/mid 70's :-[
Can't condone what he went on to do, but can't deny he could put on an amazing show in his day.
-

Ooh yes, I'd forgotten all about Batley Variety Club - THE place to go and see some of the top acts of the time. :)
-
Dire Straits, London, and The Pretenders also in London, around my 18th birthday, and I ain't telling you what year that was ;) :D
-
I think the band names give us a clue, either that or you were a very young wild child ;)
-
First concert (but not group) was Tom Jones when I was eleven :-[ Think it was at the London Palladium.
First groups (but not sure in what order ) were Hawkwind, Argent, Vinegar Joe, Mott The Hoople and Mungo Jerry, all who were regulars at our youth club. Then it was the hippy scene at the Roundhouse at Chalk Farm every Sunday, Hyde Park and Isle of Wight concerts - what a fantastic time to be around.
-
Blimey, there.s some names from the past, would I be right in saying pi55y a certain lady called Elkie Brooks sang with vinegar joe, she had a great voice.
-
Hi Des, yes you are quite right Elkie Brooks sang with Vinegar Joe. Robert Palmer was also a member of the band - and very good they were.
-
The Sweet at the Mayfair In Newcastle (Upon Tyne for you Southerners) in 1973. They were Glam Rock on TV but a plain old good old rock band live.
-
Some great first gigs for the old nostalgia - but even better for me the old venues - magical :)
-
Emile Ford and the Checkmates around 1960 at the long gone Olympia,East Kilbride.
-
Do you remember Wakefield Theatre club and The Fiesta in Sheffield Marina... We saw The 1959 Rock and roll show at one of them.. Not in 1959 I hasten to add... It starred Marti Wilde. Heinz. Tommy Bruce..and Billy Fury...Absolutley brilliant night and Billy Fury died just 2 weeks later...He was a gorgeous looking man.
-
first band was the four pennies at the palace theatre in manchester about 1964 eden kane was also on the bill, but the best by far was status quo at the g,mex in manchester about 8 or 9 years ago rocked the house down
-
Mercury - definitely remember Wakefield Theatre Club. Think we saw Freddie Starr there when he'd be at the height of his fame! Would be others we went to see too but can't for the life of me remember who! ???
Don't remember going to Sheffield much in my younger days so not that familiar with The Fiesta, though I have heard of it. But, you're right about Billy Fury - pretty young when he died too if I remember rightly.
-
David Essex in southport in 1976 (I think). Seen him on every tour since. Recent years. Take That, Deacon blue, Will Young, culture club, Barry Manilow. Jules Holland.
-
We would have been in the same audience Marina. We went to see him there as well....If I remember rightly he spent most of his time with his back to the audience talking to his backing group... He did however do his Elvis tribute in the 2nd half. It was fantastic!!! I am thoroughly jealous of some of The stars other people on this forum have seen. Our biggest stars were Elton John at Birmingham Arena.. Amazing!! and The Bee Gees at Wembley stadium...Also amazing but we were sitting so farback that we could barely see them....apart from the big screen...I was gutted as I have beeen a Bee Gees fan since I was 14 years old....
-
Slade at the Rainbow Theatre Finsbury Park in 1972. Backed up by the then unknown Suzi Quattro and Thin Lizzy!! Brilliant :)
-
Small world Mercury! ;D I must admit this topic has really brought back memories of the bands I've seen over the last 50 years (I started young!!) and have seen some really great acts.
However, my one big regret, which I think I've said on here before in other topics, is that I never got to see Queen perform with Freddie Mercury before he died. That would have been amazing.
They did come to Leeds, Elland Road I think, early eighties but we didn't go, probably because our girls were only little then and we probably couldn't afford to! :(
But, just for something to look forward to when we get back from Calis at the end of May :(, we're going to see 'One Night of Queen' in Bradford. This is a guy called Gary Mullen who, years ago, won Stars in Their Eyes as Freddie Mercury and now tours the world with his tribute act. Now I 'm not normally a fan of tribute acts, most of them aren't that good, but this guy is fantastic. We've seen him a couple of times before and had a really great night. :)
-
Just got back from seeing The Dubliners in Swindon.
Can't quite believe the guitar/banjo skills despite their age !!!
You can not beat live music :D :D :D
-
Jimmy James and the Vagabonds at the Doocote in Edinburgh 1969.
-
Went to see Sting in 1979 at Newcastle City Hall, a little known band Called U2 were supporting, have to say Sting was only moderate however been a U2 fan since, absolutly fantastic live, seen them 17 times since then :D
-
The Beatles in a wooden church hall in sutton coldfield in 1963 and they were paid £50 between the four and the van driver. The support group had a local lad , Brian Hines as singer. He changed his name a few times and his groups (inc Moody Blues) then called himself Denny Laine and played with McCartney in Wings. The first Arena concert I went to was the first ever concert at the old Wembley Stadium in 1972.It started just before noon with young upstarts like Billy Fury,Marty Wilde ect .Gary Glitter got took off after a couple of numbers for his own protection, (they were throwing beer bottles at him) Screaming Lord Sutch, then got onto the good stuff.!Jerry Lee Lewis,Bill Haley and the Ccmets,Bo Diddley,Little Richard and closed with Chuck Berry doing a fantastic set.And not a bleeding thing about it next day in the sunday papers.
-
Focus at Southport Theatre in 1976. Not much singing but classic guitar work :)
-
I've just remembered an earlier one!! The Wurzels, Red Triangle caravan park, somewhere in Cornwall circa 1974/5 ish :o
-
You're a lucky fella Kevin3!
-
Queen. It's a Kind of Magic at Wembley Stadium in 1986. Spent the next few years going to as many concerts as I could, including Rod Stewart (as a favour!!) Madonna, Feargal Sharkey and Phil Collins to name a few and seen my favourites Level 42 on many occasions, most recently at the Royal Albert Hall in October last year and have to say they are as good now as they always were BUT Queen were unbeatable! Even Barry Manilow in Las Vegas didn't come close ;)
-
Lotty, We were luckier than we realised and took some of it for granted. While the Beatles were playing we went to the pub up the road for 1/2 hour to get a pint.My generation were spoilt for choice in the sixties and the Midlands was a fantastic place to be.
-
Emerson, Lake and Palmer at the Winter Gardens Bournemouth, what a mind blowing experience that was for a first concert :o

Aretha Franklin live at the Victoria Apollo R-E-S-P-E-C-T !
-
Early in the 70s at the Manchester Gaumont. A so called super group called Cream with Ginger Baker (I think). They were pretty terrible.
The support act, a guy called David Bowie who played one song, his then chart topper "Space Oddity" . Played on the acoustic guitar. It was magic.
Later, but still in the early 70s, we saw the Supremes with Mary Bell. Dastardly. The support act was a soul singer called Joe Brown. Far Out Man. (It was cool to say that then)
As it was our first date, I took Sue for a meal of Sweet and Sour Pork and a sophisticated bottle of Reisling.
We have neither eaten S/S pork, drank Reisling or listened to the Supremes since.
Memories

Chris Farlowe and the Thunderbirds at Ross-on-Wye jazz club in 1965, the year before his great hit Out Of Time,he's still on the circuit now at 72 years of age, if not remembered for OOT but for the guy who Mike D'Abo first wrote Handbags and Gladrags, before rod Stewart and later The Stereophonics sang the song.

You must be a Manfreds fan?
Saw Chris Farlow about 3 years ago supporting The Manfreds - he was very very good - never realised before just how good he was.
-
Hi Ian We,ve seen Chris farlowe many times over the last 10 years, last Autum travelled to Turf moor, 220 mile for a charity do where Chris sang with the Soul Survivors, hell of a night and the 1st time for us South Walians to see Northern soul still being danced. A few years ago we saw him in Newport fronting a band called Endangered Species and so they were,as far as I can remember Chris lead singer, Zoot Money on Keyboards, a guitarist from Deep Purple, Tony Ashton of Aston Gardener and Dyke can't remember the others but they were all in their late 50 hence Endangered Species, and as you mentioned the Manfreds saw him in Bristol with late great Long John Baldry just before he died, all good memories of my favourite ever singer.
-
Just been doing some investigation just can't believe what I,ve found out it wasn't a guitarist from Deep Purple but the late Jon Lord
-
Aw Chris Farlowe ' Out ofTouch'
-
I saw two bands very close together, and cant remember which one was first - The Boomtown Rats and The Jam, both in the summer of 1979 in Cardiff :)
Off to see Kodaline next week in Birmingham ("who?" I hear you ask!), a new up and coming band (listen to them on youtube, they are amazing!), then Robbie Williams in June; also Muse in June, both in Manchester! :) Oh yeah, and Stereophonics in Cardiff in September. :)
Yes, we go to see bands as often as we can, and have been to many concerts over the years; have watched dozens of bands! :)

We saw the Stereophonics at the Olympic opening ceremony concert at Hyde Park last year... stunning!
Muse were one of the last concerts we saw before moving over here. Quite simply awesome!
I'm back in the UK in June to see family and will be sneaking off to the O2 to see KOL.
My first was Wishbone Ash in 1972 at Southampton Guildhall and I still think they were the loudest band I've ever seen.
-
Ah now, loudest band, that would be a thread and a half!
-
Thats just got to be Dr Feelgood - Lewisham Odeon 1973 - couldn't hear properly for a week :) :)
-
Think it was the Hollies 1964 in Brighton! Wow I feel old!
Meldrew
-
U2 at The King' s Hall in Belfast,1986. It was The Joshua Tree tour and the best out of any I saw of them. The worst being The Rose Garden in Portland, Oregon... We were so high up there was an echo and a delay, it was awful!
-
first saw U2 at the (in)famous gig where there were less than 30 people!!!!
-
saw U2 at roundhey park in leeds 92.000 people was ok getting in but getting out after omg was awful , then saw them again at the etihed stadium manchester home of the champions both tours were fantastic .
-
Could be the start of a new topic Paul - which venue was the hardest to get out of. I've been to quite a few down south and I doubt anything came close to trying to escape the old Wembley Stadium - absolutely horrific!
-
For me the Eagles who were supporting the Beach Boys at Wembley early 70's
-
So, interestingly, who was the LAST musician you saw live?(should this be a new thread?)
-
(http://s11.postimg.org/fl2zqte6n/band.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/fl2zqte6n/)
-
Is that the Bay city rollers John. :)
-
Must have been 1963 and I was playing drums with a local band at a church hall in Scarborough. The drummer in one of the other bands didn't turn up so they asked me to stand in. The band was called the Mandrakes and the singer was a guy called Alan Palmer. Later changed his name to Robert and went on to greater things. For a while he was also our milkman before becoming a reporter on the local rag.
-
Robbie Williams, Milton Keynes Bowl, getting out of jail would've been easier!
-
Through a friend in the hospitality business we got free VIP tickets for ZZ Top at MK Bowl - we even parked next to their helicopter! I've been to the Bowl quite a few times and never saw anything as disappointing as ZZ Top (who I didn't like much anyway).
I think the capacity of the Bowl is around 50,000 - and I would estimate that 15 to 20,000 turned and left after the final support act finished, Sir Bryan of Adams.
