Snow in the North West
« Reply #30 on: January 06, 2010, 09:23:40 AM »
In Bury, it's really bad, I fell last time in the snow and broke my arm, so I drove to work! (scared of walking)
A 5 min journey took me 45! I drove up the hill, and slid down again-tried 3 different routes before I got onto main road!
All schools closed and the call centre I work in closed at 4pm for the 1st time ever because of weather.
On my department there are usually approx 40 people in at 8am, yesterday there were 2 of us, quite busy as you can imagine!
Oh well, something for our children to remember! All fun!
 :) :)

None of the snow has melted and neither have the roads been gritted around here, with -8c tonight, only Torvill & Dean will be happy in the morning.

My hubby's a train driver in Bristol, and we live in South East Wales, about 26 miles away.  He should have been working at 4.30am this morning, but with our first full night of snow, there was no budging his car at 3.45am.  We live down a long narrow lane and the bend round to the back of our house is tricky on a good day!

He rang into work to say he couldn't get his car out, then proceeded to walk the 5 miles to our local train station, catching the first morning train to work at 6.50am, arriving half an hour later.  He then had the 5 mile trek back home, in 8" of snow, at the end of a 10 hour shift.  :(

He's tried digging his car out this afternoon, but it's not going anywhere, as its on an icy slope!  He's just rang into work again and explained, and asked if it was ok for him to get the first train again tomorrow.   :)

The bloke who answered the phone was vile and told him that this weather could last a fortnight and that he needs to get into work on time!!!  How many people make no effort at all, let alone a 10 mile walk, on top of a full shift.  He's not happy!!   :-\

I agree, tell Bob to stay in bed and ring in sick later in the day. Not many train drivers in the SE of England would walk for 5 minutes to get to work, let alone 5 miles!

He wishes he had just phoned in sick now - it would have caused a lot less hassle!  And you're right, he says there's not another train driver he knows who would make an effort to walk, let alone 5 miles each way!!  Still not sure quite how he is going to get there .........   :-\

The trouble is, once you've rang in with your sob story, it's difficult to then call in sick!  He's not the type to pull a sickie anyway, and rarely takes any time off work (you can count on your fingers the number of days he's had sick in the last 30 years!)   :o
