"Dolphinarium plans create major protest"

Have just returned from meeting with the mayor Keramettin Yilmaz -KY- and fellow officials, also visited the Muhtar.
Was shown great hospitality and received warm welcome by both gentlemen.
KY said that all the council has done, is to allow the construction of a pool on the land. They do not have the plans.THE BUILDING OF THE DOLPHINARIUM WILL GO AHEAD and indeed builing works were inoperation today.
Once completed Vali will have to then approve or disapprove it.
The contact detail for this official is mugla@icisleri.gov.tr
He will make the decision.
The European standards for the keeping of dolphins in pools was left on KYs desk and were shown to the Muhtar.
It was explained to all present that pool does not meet ONE of the criterea. The owner of the dolphins AK is quoted as saying that it will meet all european standards, it most clearly doeas not.
Health and safety issues were highlighted, eg dolphins are capable of killing whales, under stress they are not predictable. The pool is not insulated from relentless  noice and vibrations from all of the fairs, night clubs etc and will suffer stress, also their sonar will be badly affected causing greater stress, because of the concrete.Add into the facts that the pool, now measuring ONLY 12 metres X17metres swim area, will be divided into two, because they wish to keep the two male dolphins seperate, will further increase the anxiety and stress levels in the dolphins.
These hightened stress levels could be a safety issue with humans in the pool.
Concern was drawn to health and safety regarding the filtration, purification, chlorination, and monitering of the water which will be a possible health risk to humans and dolphins alike if not conducted in acordance with the regulations. No member had any knowledge of these systems to be implemented, it was left to the Buisiness man to deal with,Alesandr Kuznetsov.
Regulations also regarding critical water temperature control, vetinary care, size of pool, customer contact, seperate pool for vetinary inspection, regular bio checks on water, qualified only personnel in charge etc etc was also in the hands of Mr Kuznetsov
The date of the completion of the pool is unknown by KY and the inspection date of the animals, ie are they fit to travel, and their travel date is also unknown by the council.
It was stressed that the concern for this project is worldwide and fast growing, which in turn will influence the perceptions of Hisaronu by tourists and this will not be favourable to local tourism.
However This project is being completed
The mayor, has said previously that his door is always open. He  and his colleagues were thanked for sparing time to listen.
The Standards for European dolphinariums is on his desk,KY will see that this project in no way meets ANY of the criterea

The WWF can back up all you have said and as an organisation may know of something that has not been thought of.
You have done so much so well Judith.

This topic on the forum seems to be going quiet, I hope it is because everyone concened is busy telephoning or emailing!
Please dont give up.. together we can stop this venture, it will be damaging to the tourist industry and harmful to the dolphins!
I can only repeat, the swimming area of the pool will measure just 12 X 17metres and divided into two. Two wonderful mammals the size of a small car will be incacerated, at altitude, in chlorinated water, stressed because of the vibrations from all the noise, their sonar affected by the concrete etc and made to pull adults around impossibly tight circles all day in order for a buisiness man to make a profit
This is so damaging to the image of Hisaronu
Ghandi once said that a country is judged by how it treats its women and animals....and the world is aware of this project by the attention on the internet
Do not be under any other illusion.. this pool is being built
How lovely it would be to see a pool built FREE for all of the children in the region and how geatly the image of Hisaronu would be improved

thank you

I have posted a simple poster to download on the Olu Deniz forum At the moment there is no visable sign anywhere to draw attention. So many people I have met either do not know the pools existence, location
or the standard to which it is being built. And they certainly do not know the effect it will have on tourism, or the worldwide interest on the internet.please ask your local tour agencies if they are aware of the of public opinion, i believe the only thing that is driving this project is money! and the only thing that might stop it.. is lack of support.
I have an email add you may like to write to mehdieken@tarim.gov.tr or www.tarim.gov.tr
he is the minister for Ag and rural affairs. it essential to be unemotional, but factual. This pool was supposed to meet the European standards, could the department check, because in its present state it clearly does not and we are concerned about the health and safety issues. Not only for the dolphins but, because of confinement and the extreme noise and vibrations from its surroundings, we are also very concerned about public safety.Dolphins are wild creatures and stress can make them unpredictable. After all they can kill a whale! Mention the worldwide protest,Hisaronu linked to cruelty ruining its reputation. Be polite he is a very well respected man and we do need his support. He is also a Vet.
It is essential not to undo the work that has been done so far, they will discard any ranting and raving. Just put the facts and your concerns.
also we very much need the hoteliers and restaurant owners especially in Hisaronu to be fulled informed, Whereever you eat, or if you know any buisiness, hairdresser etc please also inform them of the worldwide protest etc and linking Hisaronu to dolphin cruelty, many of them are so busy getting ready for the season they are unaware of the situation. also they have been told that it will be an asset to tourism.
I thank you as always
