Standing in a field near Aldershot playing on a background recording to a battlefield scene for the Charge of the Light Brigade film (1968). And then being told to de-tune our instruments and play as roughly as possible, as we were playing too musically.
The Sound Engineer explained that we were replacing a local army which had been used on location in Turkey, as they could not play well enough!
Later that year. In full Uniform, on Clapham Common, waiting to play for a Horse Show. Pal Fred the Tuba player was approached by a tall young lady asking what time the Arena Events started. Fred answering ‘ don't know love, but we play from 2 to 2.30. Then being approached by a tall gentleman, striding along with his arms clasped behind his back. He asked Fred just where the arena was. ‘don't exactly know, but that Bird just in front is going there. Why don't you follow her'?
I tried to disappear into Fred's Tuba, having witnessed him talking to Princess Anne and Prince Philip.
Earlier that year. Accompanying Bud Flanagan to record the opening theme for Dad's Army. Violin. Orchestra of the Coldstream Guards Band. Then recording the closing credits march with the Band of the Coldstream Guards.
