We always carry a copy of our passports  when abroad for the same reason .

I always find it odd that people are so scared of carrying a passport, yet they feel responsible enough to carry a wallet or a purse, credit cards, phones, cameras, money, with no problem, but as soon as a passport is mentioned they don't feel responsible and are terrified of losing it.
.

The difference surely is that I cannot use a copy of my credit cards, phone, camera or money but a copy of my passport may suffice.

But the rule right now is to carry your original full travel document.
Not a photocopy, however prettily laminated it is  ;)

Well people have been told a copy will not do, but they insist that is what they are going to carry.. I give up.

Fortunately, I think there maybe enough room in my budgie smugglers to accommodate my full passport when I go down the beach :-)
